N+1 itch to scratch. Currently use my steel SS 29er and road bike most. Planning on selling the hardcore HT, tourer and fixie as they just dont get any use.

Main use would be a muddy 6 mile commute, 50/50 mud/gravel.

CX bike may get used as a winter road bike and for racing if fitness improves. That leave me with the CX bike, a do it all 29er hardtail and my road bike.

Fat bike would probably get used for mid week night rides where outright pace isn’t an issue in a big group and would probably replace the steel HT which would free up sapce for a more out and out XC bike, also leading to racing if fitness improves. That’d leave me with the Fatty, a propper XC bike (something else I want), and my road bike.

CX bike is probably the most versitile/sensible, but a fat bike ironicly would free up more bike space to cover more niches overall (without resorting to n+2)!

    What do you reckon?

I’ve just gone fatty after renting one for two days at CYB I liked it that much. I’m learning on tarmac they kind of suck but as soon as your off road they are great and I’ve resorted to just smashing through everything and holding on. It’s a whole new world I tell you…….

    You need both,

Like fd3chris I hired one at CYB and have since got a Mukluk. You just plugh through straight into and then through anything and everything in your path.

Have a Genesis CDF as well as full Susser and hardtail and a carbon road bike to play n.

Just scratching the n+1 itch with. plum crazy stooge that’s going single speed though.

As you’re selling 3 bikes it’s only reasonable that you buy at least 2 bikes to replace them else you’d be n-2.

I’d go for a fatbike, more smiles per mile!

What would you commute on in this case?

Swap the road bike for a CX bike, then get a fat bike and grin like a chimp on those night rides … win win 😀

That’s too much like a sensible rhetorical question!

    Get a fatbike; I love mine! 😀

CX bikes are horrible. So bad in fact, that I’ve never ever ridden one! 😡

Darn, I thought I’d chip in and say cx for sure, as they’re superb fun, fast and keep you fit (believe you are in the Chilterns too, and they are very good here, especially in the winter). Thought i’d persuaded myself I didn’t need a fatty, but after reading the above I also find I’m in the n+1 position still.

Cx also replaces the need for a road bike for me.

    no no no.

    without resorting to n+2

    N+1 + 6 months = N.

N+2 only exists if you buy two bikes at once.

Get the fatbike and a set of BSC slicks for it.

    Best of both worlds.
