Facebook kweshtyun!!!!

Ok, I’m guilty, hands up. I use facebook, to mainly see what family/mates are up to, don’t post much but one thing that is really naffing me off is the ‘games you may like’ affair that appears at the top of my page every time I refresh it.
I don’t ‘do’ games, never have, never shown any interest, & people who send me games request whotsits get unfollowed or advised accordingly.
I know it’s not that important, not the end of the world, but it’s pissing me off. There doesn’t seem to be a ‘see less games’ or a ‘stick your games up your arse’ button either, so apart from not go on the stupid, ridiculous, annoying, pile of shite site that it is…what can i do?(I’ve actually started doing a similar to FB without the use of a computer/phone. I’ve been going round chatting to complete strangers & showing them pictures of my dinner/dog/cat, telling them where I’ve been/going/am, & up to now I’ve got 4 people following me.

Yes there is.
If you see one on that post, or indeed any post, there’s a little arrow pointing down. Click that and select to block them.

I don’t really do Faceache either, probably visit twice a year. What sort of games? Online Monopoly? Trivial Pursuits? Cluedo? I used to dabble with Settlers of Catan, which was fun. If there was an online version of that, I might have a look.
Unless… You mean… Grown up type games?

Misread that the first time… but on second thoughts, could see it happening. Good way to see who’s got a contraband phone anyway…
esselgruntfuttockFree MemberDrac, the only arrow pointing down is for ‘take a survey to make news feed better’ which doesn’t mention games.

LOL! It does happen, not to my knowledge at our place yet but it defo happens!
CountZeroFull MemberI use Fb a lot, following a large number of musicians and bands, a whole bunch of friends and relations, and other things I’m interested in, like photography, woodcarving and custom knives, hot rods and street rods.
I used to get a lot of those game posts, purporting to be from various friends, but which aren’t, and I’ve done as Drac says.
Haven’t had any for quite a while, and, TBH, they’re less irritating than the frakking watch advert on here! 👿PookFull Member‘ve actually started doing a similar to FB without the use of a computer/phone. Whether it’s the same Peter White who is declaring war on the paths of the Peak I don’t know.
😉

Yup appeared on Viz Facebook page the other day.
MrSmithFree MemberWhat I don’t like is the ‘friends suggestions’ that are taken from random work emails from over 5 years ago??
How is Facebook getting these people from my email when the only account linked to FB is a non-work one I use to subscribe to mailing lists and just about every privacy box has been ticked?
I think it’s a back-door thing from an update in OSX or iOS. I don’t use google or yahoo mail either so it’s not through that. Very annoying. I feel my privacy has been violated. I also don’t like to be reminded of the freelance goons I have worked with in the past.DougDFull MemberFrom the mobile app:
1 – go into account settings
2 – click on apps
3 – click on platform
4 – select no to game requestssorted

How is Facebook getting these people from my email when the only account linked to FB is a non-work one I use to subscribe to mailing lists and just about every privacy box has been ticked?Fairly easily actually.
Facebook has options to let people search for all friends in their address book or even worse to scan through their emails to look for friends.
People use these.
You have emailed those people. You are in their address books. Or their friends address books. Even if you use a different email at facebook you probably still use the same name and you may have friends/workplaces/locations in common with those it is linking you to.
MrSmithFree MemberFairly easily actually.
Facebook has options to let people search for all friends in their address book or even worse to scan through their emails to look for friends.
but how does it know which ‘Gary Smith’? there must be millions when my facebook account has never been associated with my work email and my profile is friends only? if a work contact from years ago lets FB access their email they will not find me because the email they have is not linked to any FB account. yet they still appear as possible friends?
there is this setting:
Who can look you up using the email address you provided?
which has friends only ticked but the email is a specific one that i have never sent a mail from only used for mailing lists.
everything else is ticked no/never/dont want/no/no/i said no/no apps/no location/ no thanks
GrahamSFull Memberbut how does it know which ‘Gary Smith’? there must be millions
I think of it like a giant collection of nodes where Facebook figures out any possible link it can between nodes. The more links there are the stronger those nodes are drawn to each other and the more strength is given to surrounding links.
I think the actual data mining they use is secretive but here are a few ideas:
– some of your friends may have both your email addresses under the same “Gary Smith” entry in their email/phone address book (easy win).
– or they may just have some other useful identifiable information like your mobile number, address, workplace, or birthday with that email in their address book
– having friends, interests and locations in common is a strong indicator that someone knows you.
– people may search for you by that email address, not find you (since you switched that off), but then find you by name instead. Which is a good hint you are linked.
– you may have browsed to other websites and used your public email address on them (or other identifying features) but that website has Facebook widgets on it which know your login with your private email addressif a work contact from years ago lets FB access their email they will not find me because the email they have is not linked to any FB account. yet they still appear as possible friends?
You may have that work colleagues address in your address book. You may have friends in common that have you both in theirs.
Other people who worked with you there might now be friends with you on facebook, or even just have searched for you and sent you a friend request which you rejected. All still good hints about people and places in common.
there is this setting:
Who can look you up using the email address you provided?I think that just determines if someone will find you if they search for you by typing in that email address. I don’t think it stops FB using that email address to figure out who you know.
gofasterstripesFree MemberOP here’s what you need:
https://www.facebook.com/fluffbustingpurity
Extension that strips most of the crap like that out of FB Feeds.
It’s shareware, try before you [choose to] donate/buy.
MrSmithFree Memberi can understand that joining the dots would allow a human to find me but there is no address/email*/location/place of work attached to me just DOB/London/name.
i still think it might be an iOS update on phone or iPad that unlocked something.
if it wasn’t for seeing what my family were up to on the far side of the world i would delete the account.*an email address that is only used for 2 private email subscription lists
GrahamSFull Memberi can understand that joining the dots would allow a human to find me
If a human can find you by joining the dots then you can bet that a very sophisticated data-mining system with access to ridiculous amounts of information can definitely find you.
i still think it might be an iOS update on phone or iPad that unlocked something.
Wouldn’t rule it out – Facebook has been integrated into iOS since iOS6 (which will sync your contacts with Facebook if you let it) – but honestly people get the same “how the *** does FB know that” effect even if they don’t own a smartphone.
if it wasn’t for seeing what my family were up to on the far side of the world i would delete the account.
At least you recognise that it is the price you pay for the service.
Only you can decide if the cost is worth it to you.esselgruntfuttockFree MemberI’m on a laptop, not a phone & this is what’s showing….

EdukatorFree MemberCNBC call it “monetising” the service. Twitter are failing but Facebook doing quite well. More and more sites are blocking ********** so you have to put up with the advertising if you wish to view without paying. I’m half expecting to find a pop-up on this site which tells me to pay up, turn my ******** off or become an exSTW user.
Lachainemeteo is an example. Firefox users with the add-on that lets you see all the ad-servers etc. on a site will note there are about 30 on the home page. I’ve noted that the number of sites that I can use with my phone is declining fast. Many of the sites I used to use redirect to advertising before you even see the home page – including this one.
BigDummyFree MemberI use Facebook a lot. I honestly can’t remember ever having got anything much about games. Either none of my friends play them, or FB knows I wouldn’t care.
🙂
