Eurotunnel – best price, quiet times, booze-cruise

Hi all,

Heading to Europe for a couple weeks this August via the Eurotunnel.

Any tips on getting the best prices? Have some Tesco Clubcard points so will utilise those, any other ideas?

We are travelling with our dog who is pretty nervous around other dogs, so would like to go through the pet check-in areas on both sides when it’s as quiet as possible – I assume this would be in the middle of the night?

We’d like to get ~40 bottles of wine for a celebration next year, best to just go to a big alcohol store near Calais? Are they even that much cheaper than a regular supermarket? Any tips for getting decent wine if I’m not a connoisseur?

I know there used to be discounted/free eurotunnel tickets if you spent a certain amount at supermarkets, assume that isn’t a thing anymore.

Limit for wine is 24 bottles post brexit. Price comparison I find a 7 euro Cote du Rhone red or a cote de Provence Rose will be of similar quality to a £10 bottle in the UK in a standard Intermarche.

The Majestic in Calais used to be a bit cheaper but they closed the store because of the new limits

One of the benefits of an SNP govt is that we can do a booze cruise just by driving to Berwick or Carlisle. A £14 bottle of whisky in England will cost £18.20 in Scotland after September.

is it not 24 bottles per person? 48 for a couple if so!

IME the larger supermarkets have wine ‘people’ in them who, in my experience, have done a decent job of pointing me towards some half decent bottles with a bit of guidance as to what I wanted – for a wedding in fact.

We’ve done it a couple of time taking the dogs. Pet check was very quiet and takes 5 mins at the counter. All they do is look at a specific page on the paperwork and scan the microchip. Went through about 08/0900 both times. Coming back is even quieter and we did that about midday both times.

Not too sure on the best times to go, as we’ve always just chosen the cheapest anyway when we know a day.

But i would also use a comparison site, such as Directferries or Ferrysavers
It always tends to be a fair bit cheaper.

Reading with interest as I have to book this soon for the first time in 5 years.

Also interested in toll tags. And wondering if you can alter your booking if you switch cars because there’s a 50:50 chance we’ll be selling and switching before the end of July.

I’ll probably be crossing between midnight and 1am anyway so I’m expecting quiet. Is that a false assumption?

Always found the cheapest  tickets and the most flexible/relaxed staff (when it comes to putting you on an earlier train) is when booking l late at night/early morning. No queues other than the occasional security check because the sniffer dogs needed exercise.

in my experience occasionally they’re a few quid cheaper on eurotunnel or up to £20 cheaper on the ferries. You can’t use clubcard vouchers etc with them, if you wanted to
