Anyone stayed here? I’ve always fancied staying in one of the shacks but wondered if it would be worth it for a week.

    Thanks

I’d think it would be a bit bleak for a week- unless you planned to explore further afield. I live in mid Kent so do day visits and that may cloud my judgement.

Never been but when I was lad and enjoyed my Cod fishing Dungie was one of the biggest iconic Cod venues in the country. Take your rod!

I went last summer for a day.

Great day out wandering around the exposed area and eating lunch at the amazing cafe on the beach (get there early)

Day yes – week, not sure about.

It’s a lovely place, remote, at times bleak and as others have said not a huge amount to do there, but a lighthouse tour, Derek Jarmans cottage and the power station offer a couple of days worth of entertainment, or one full day.

But venture a bit further and you can visit Rye, Hastings, Camber and Tenterden. Or head the other way Folkestone, Dover, Deal and Sandwich. Of course you have Canterbury too although I think it has gone downhill in recent years it still has lots of tourist attractions. Don’t forget Wye, Chilham and Winchelsea. And don’t forget Bodiam.

Plenty of castles about thinking about it.

Lots of water sport available along that stretch of coast too, golf too if you like although a bit hard to get on some of the courses.

All of those are pretty much within an hours travel, as are the north downs for some excellent walking.

Grab an OS map and plan!

I’d be happy with a good book, coffee, beer, wine and snacks watching the weather roll in too though.

Wasn’t sure if the thread was going to be about a town in Kent or a lady clad in leather with a threatening demeanour…

    On balance, disappointed…

As @cogglepin says, great for a spot of fishing (just an excuse to use one of my favourite photos in reality).

The Pilot Inn is worth at least one visit for their fish and chips.

Also you could hop on a 1/3 size steam locomotive on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway.

+1 for the railway, very enjoyable!

    It’s not about a town either 😉

I like the place, although don’t visit that often. It’s kinda got a surreal vibe to it. I like the fact there’s not much there.

I did a Kent motorbike tour last summer and loved the place. I rate it over Ramsgate, Margate etc.

Stayed there in the motorhome. A day is definitely enough. Lot’s of shingle and very flat.

20+ years ago I had a girlfriend whose dad lived in the old old lighthouse (round house) next to the power station. I spent a couple of Christmases there. Amazing place. I think she lives there now.

Reeksy did the lighthouse have any amazing curved brick roof in the basement?

Yes – a huge brick dome. Guessing you’ve been there?

    All good.

    I’ll sort pix out.

Some nice road cycle routes from there going inland a bit. The coast is nice when it’s not windy.

Reeksy yes I worked there a few years back. Loved the place, very interesting. She was ok too think she was Kathryn from memory without looking through my records?

Yep. That’s her. Her Dad had done some interesting things with the place.

Apparently the Morcheeba song The Sea was written by one of the band members that stayed there.

@Red Thunder – love the pen sketches! Dungeoness is somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for years, the geography is so unusual, really rather surreal.

Fatbike across the pebbles is good fun and the sound mirrors are interesting.

A bit of a trek, but I recommend Chatham Dockyard

    Underwhelmed by Canterbury

Find Chris Eubank’s book about Kent. If you like that find the one about Ethics, but that is a longer drive 🙂

    @countzero

Thanks. I have a few more somewhere.

Jo-Anne my partner is a print maker has some superb sketches and prints from Dungeness.

    @rickmeister

Riding on the pebbles is a challenge 🙂 But taking the bike really opens up the area.

As for MTB gnar…. Does not exist there.

I wanted to check out Romney, but never had time. The sandy track across to the mirrors was fun.

Sandy beach out that way as well.

Britannia (pub) was alright for cheesy chips.

Forget the The Pilot, overpriced IMO.  There is a really good Fish & Chip Futher up the coast near the Mirrors.

    Proper local.
