Drop Bar, Alfine 8 or SS, Disc Brakes = ……?

Been looking into an all rounder (leisure, towpaths, short commute) for a week or so now. Currently considering this On-One Pompetamine Alfine 8 Speed (http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBOOPOMPALF/on_one_pompetamine_alfine_8_speed). If this had drops I wouldn’t be here now! I really want drops.

Would it be much work/expense (or is it even possible?) to mod this so that it has drops?

The closest thing to what I want is the Genesis Day One Alfine 8 (http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/cross/day-one/day-one-alfine-8). I really like this bike but at £1150 it’s a little more than I wanted to spend.

I’ve considered the Genesis Day One Disc (http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/cross/day-one/day-one-disc) but I’m concerned if the single gear will cause me grief. I’m new to cycling. My short commute is relatively flat, a slight incline across my journey with one or two bridges to get over.

Have a missed a bike which ticks these boxes?
– disc brakes
– drop bars
– Alfine 8 (possibly single geared if you think its suitable for a cycling newbie)

i ended up with a homebrew road rat flat bar alfine disk model with some versa VRS 8s i sourced my self and some used drop bars/short stem

all for under 1k.

i found the genisis to be ultra stiff rear end compared to the road rat (we have a day one alfine disk in the house too…)

Converting the Pomp is going to be expensive. You’ll need bars, tape & possibly cables (obviously), Versa 8 shifters and road calipers (the Pomp will have mountain calipers that have a different cable pull). New, about £250 I’d imagine.

The pomp actually comes with the road bb7’s so only needs the shifters, bars and tape to convert it. With some shopping around that could be under £200.

I have same as ir bandito.
Frame seconh hand, and cheap alfine/ versa from on one, came in well under £1k.
The belt drive conversion I have just had fitted, adds a little more though..
Great bikes.
Little bit heavy, but loads of fun.

@twojumpers. Ah, they supply it with MTB levers and road calipers? Odd but good news from a cost perspective.

Have you ridden a bike with an Alfine before ? If not, make sure you do. I was going to buy one but tried a friends for a few days and hated it. Just my opinion but may save you a lot of money in the long run.

spesh, why did you hate Alfine? I’ve not ridden one. To be honest I’m thinking about manning up and just getting the Day One Disc SS! lol.

For info, I’ve just had an email from On One confirming the flat barred Pomp has MTB type BB7’s on it (I.e. not as the website). This means the OP would need to buy road BB7 calipers as well for a full flat to drop conversion. Shoud be able to sell the MTB calipers on for some ££ recovery though.

Sorry – it didn’t make sense with on-one stating road bb7 on their flat bar bike, which isn’t really possible without bloody odd flat bars.

The diameter of road drop bars are different to mtb flat bars never the twain will meet as I found out when looking for bull bars in mtb size (22.2mm).

til I found bingo bars – just finished a hydro disc, geared bull bar pomp.

Looks bloody odd.
