Dog – post surgery issues

Our 5yr old Boxer had surgery on her knee (cruciate ligament) 1 1/2 weeks ago which means she cannot walk for 6 weeks.

We have to limit her to 2 rooms and a small space outside to avoid her damaging the knee whilst the bones heal.

1.5 weeks in and we are noticing that her habits are changing ie she isnt eating until 4pm in the afternoon, shes sleeping all morning, will sleep 10pm to about 1am but is then restless from 1am until about 5am.

We have 3 food type toys which require her to use her nose / mouth to get to food, but if we give her that all the time she will get fat!

How can we keep her entertained in the daytime, given that we work, she cant play etc.

We dont think she is depressed as still happily wagging her tail etc.

Chews and filled frozen kongs.

Also teaching her low impact tricks.

Take her for a drive so she can look out the window. She’ll be using ears and nose during that period which will help

Dogs love company, just being with them makes them happy and relaxed

When ours had a big op, we took him to work and put him in a pen with a comfy mattress. He could see us all day and just chilled

Yeah….devise or Google some tricks to teach her. Using her brain will knacker her out and she’ll love learning

We have a puzzle mat with velcro/wooden pull sticks. Used it extensively during lockdown to keep Bert mentally stimulated.

Bert loved watching us place the cheese in the puzzle then velcro the flaps/close the puzzle.

I took our Henry to sniffer dog classes, he really took to it and if I need 15/20 mins of entertainment for him since it’s the go-to game. There are some starter games here for free you could do in the house for mental rather than physical stimulation.

Scent work. Its good fun, they can barely stand afterwords.

Its can literally require no movement aswell. Three cup game etc.

Teach her to indicate aswell.
