Rental stair case is painted only and grubby, I’d like to put some carpet on the tread tops only, each tread is a different size.

As it’s a rental not too crazy on price.

Self adhesive or glue on would work.

Self adhesive carpet? Never heard of that (EDIT: Well, now I have!), and not sure I’d trust that on something like stair treads. You can get self-adhesive carpet tiles and then cut them to shape, which would probably look worse.

Also, if the glue is strong enough to hold carpet, it will potentially leave the treads in a worse state when you come to leave than if you cut some offcut to fit and used gripper strip and carpet tacks to fix it.

What’s the wood like under the paint? Would the landlord be agreeable to you sanding it down and treating it instead to make it look nicer?

    I’m not sanding.

In a world where you can pretty much instal windows with expanding foam and use grip adhesives for wonky worktop upstands, I’m sure there’s some sticky carpet glue for stairs.

Any links to any tried and tested stuff?
