I’ve got a couple of ‘old’ servers that aren’t doing anything just now. I need to remove the OS on them as it is proprietary and stick something else on…probably a flavour of Linux.

I’m thinking I could use one to store home security/wildlife footage. I’ve a couple of external locations that could be improved by adding some cameras. Got a pond that attracts a bit of wildlife and would be good to see it all.

Probably 4 outside and I’d need to work out how to wire them instead of WiFi, but I’d like to hook them up and then store 24/7 footage from each camera for 7 days.

Server has 8 large hard drives, about a terabyte each so I’m guessing space wouldn’t really be an issue.

Any tips on how best to do this? I’m tempted with DIY as the server is fast and large storage and is zero cost, but I need to know if there is suitable software available to set this up myself (as well as possible suitable cameras), etc.

    Cheers.
