Currently in Les Gets for the DH with a toddler – big mistake so far…

So I write this with a heavy heart and we booked as people had said that Les gets wasn’t noisy at all even world champs time. We have a toddler who needs to be in bed for 7pm and for other reasons we’ve had some bad nights sleep (him waking up struggling to settle recently)

So we got here and loved the day but the night there is football on and no joke the music is still on at 1:45am. Both absolutely exhausted and just want some sleep…. I love a party myself but if we knew it was going to be this loud we’d have stayed away and drove in….

not even sure what this post is as I can’t think straight, mainly I’d say if you have a very young family don’t stay very close to the event village. It is loud, or has been tonight. Praying it’s just because France played but tomorrow it’s England so are we going to have the same again? Genuinely don’t know if we need to sack this off and get a last minute place in a quiet location swallowing the cost as everyone needs sleep…. Looks like the music as I type is finally off just before 2am.

I’d say we’d try but headphones for tomorrow night but we have a little un so need to hear the baby monitor. We nearly did stay further away but we’re informed that it’ll be fine noise levels. They aren’t… a real shame! We should definitely have just come me and her for the weekend!

It’s the weekend, France are playing football & the World Cup is in town – the French do love going for it when Sport is on. I expect it will be wild today / tonight if someone French wins as well.

Les Gets is absolute carnage on a WC weekend – the whole town gets consumed by it & yesterday was ‘quiet’, but it still took a while for us to find somewhere to park & wander over to watch the racing.

If you can suffer tonight, you should be fine by the end of tomorrow. FWIW, I would pick a spot on the outskirts of Morzine next time ?

Get some white noise running on your phone as loud as possible! Might help little one and mum n dad.

I’m afraid whoever told you that was very wrong. The last two years have been unreal with massive crowds and French wins.

I guess all you can hope for is a storm to keep people away and non French winners.

These people are liars. They either haven’t been there during a WC weekend or they have and they hate you.

Hopefully the weather doesn’t get too bad. There’s been a lot of flooding in the area recently and it’s forecast to get a little wild later on.

Thanks folks…. We thought we’d done enough research but possibly not enough.

I was dubious but believed what we were told, in the end we got 4 hours sleep and feel as good as we could possibly on that!
Expecting just as much noise tonight, actually little un slept through the whole night, was more we were exhausted so to give us the energy we need to deal with him we needed that sleep!

As further advice which I hope can help others in future we found it hard this morning as the DH slope is so steep we got him in the backpack and I got him 30 seconds up the hill in view of finish line. The hardest thing is with the changeable weather finding a flat spot that’s sheltered. With a child who’s an accomplished walker, no issues i’d say but being a non walker and that young needed to get him to sleep at 11am cuddled into Mrs Chris. Fine in itself but an hour later or even half an hour later her ass was numb. If that child is asleep there’s no waking them before as they need that time to be settled!

Add to that the rain came down we saw some mens DH but then just had to come back as it was all getting a bit too awful! Fine now, but if it’s bad weather you won’t get far up the hill (which is why you come let’s be honest-some may be more adventurous than us and dispute that)  really unless you have a very settled child, and you actually only really come for the atmosphere…

Finals were pulled forward due to lightning storms coming, however it’s brightening up…. I thought just British weather was changeable! ?

If you have a second child (don’t) they’ll be fine for this as they’ll be used to putting up with all manner of shenanigans during nap/bed time and you’ll be wondering why the first was so hard. Welcome to parenting. It’s lovely isn’t it 😉

Just finished watching it, good race in hellish conditions. I wish they’d “**** right off” with the chainsaws, if I was stood next to a twunt waving one he’d be getting a slap in the face.

Aye whoever told you it would be quiet is a liar or they were thinking about any other week than race week. It’s probably the maddest venue on the circuit?

Yeahhh there are zero plans on having another. Currently in bed listening to boom boom boom boom Y-M-C-A ? I mean the atmosphere here is impressive…. Just not with a toddler as you can’t enjoy it!

Just don’t decide to go to Morzine instead next year without checking the dates for Harley week beforehand.

You probably didn’t come here for parenting advice, but you do sound like a bit of a newbie in need.

The toddler doesn’t need to go to bed at 7pm on holiday. Adjust the 11-12 hours sleep to fit in with your plans. And take it turns with your partner to wear ear plugs to block out the party noise and you’ll be much more refreshed the next day.

Um, you’re in the mountains, English and Scottish mountain weather can change dramatically within minutes.

When I went to Vail in ‘94 for the Worlds, the weather was wonderful, but there was a sudden blinding flash and bang out of a clear blue sky with fluffy clouds, and someone walking across the Expo car park was struck and rushed to hospital, never did find out what happened to them. Vail village is at 8250’, IIRC.

A bunch of us rode up to Mid-Vail on the fire road, by the time I got up there, at a bit over 10,000 ft, the temperature had dropped to the low 50’s from the mid-70°, and it came on to snow. That was in September.
The climate is a lot more volatile nowadays.

I think our mindset is “don’t change his routine just because we’re on holiday” but by 7pm he’s honestly knackered and rubbing his eyes.

We also bath him every night which adds another 30 mins admin into the mix although I’ve questioned this my OH doesn’t want to change that routine. We do now here, go for a pushchair walk around the resort after his tea to tire him out and he does seem to get the 12 hours sleep which is wonderful for us… just hoping now the champs are over that the parties are more muted tonight!

But yes 100%…. As a new parent you alot of the time feel like a fish out of water, learn as you go. Punished by bad decisions or scheduling and god forbid with him you cock up on his naps/feeding… it’s not worth the result that follows!

Having said that, my mum and dad have a 43 year old who still answers back and thinks they know best.

Just embrace it. Get the kid in a push chair and go out for a drink. You’re on holiday, chill out. They’ll sleep if they’re tired!

British weather is annoyingly changeable… As in, we wanted a BBQ and then it started raining, whereas in the mountains it can be life changing changeable.

Had a massive storm last night here just south of Belluno. Dark skies with massive thunder bolts and copious amounts of rain. Glad we were in the van and not exposed on a mountain.

The Commencal Tent party finished at 03:30 Sunday morning….

The weather killed teh street party a little though. XC was also good on Sunday with better weather.

My 13 year old often likes to join in on her uke when I’m playing the guitar. She can’t play the uke*.

Mind you, my wife would probably point out that I am not all that great on the guitar, especially when she’s had a long day and wants an early night and I’m making ‘stupid noises on a stupid instrument’. Never grow up! :good:

*yet. And I’m hoping she picks up one of my guitars one day.

This x100 a good cowbell is a nice thing but an insanely revved bladeless chainsaw is annoying beyond belief.

Oh I have video from the Les Gets village of two young French lads just pretending to fight each other with them. There’s just no filter really, they do it because the want and aren’t thinking “will this be funny or annoying” they just do it… and in small doses it’s funny! It was the vuvuzela’s that I wanted to crush during the night when tossers are still blowing them at 1am and muggins over here still can’t sleep.

Anyway pleased to announce as I’m sure some are curious on the Sunday night after the XC the party all finished. The bars went back to normal and I got a full nights sleep which felt wonderful!

You’re right though when we went past the commencal party after Amaury had done it again… the DJ was just getting warmed up and we were loving it. We and said 2 year old got absolutely drenched by heavy rain that was meant to come about 3 hours beforehand which which we then realised earliers rain was just a warning shot!
I think Tahnee’s party was probably a bit of a washout due to the intense rain but yep the bar on the side of our apartments had regressed back to the usual levels and Les Gets was as some (the advice we were given) had said it was fine and quietens down in the evening…

Lesson Learned anyway, we’re back in the Bourgogne region now for the next few days and planning at least one voie verte ride with little chap as he loved the ride to the Tour where we spectated as it came through Puligny Montrachet!
