MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
i can't make my mind up about a winter/cross bike, i really fancy a X but also have a very good offer a Focus Mares.
I know the X will be heavier than a alloy frame but how much really? anyone got the numbers?
No idea on the alu frame, but the X is 4.5lbs ish depending on size. Probs 1lb or so more than alu frame.
54cm weekend build 23.5lb
Cy, I must email you, sorry it's been so long!
If mainly racing cross, get the Mares or similar... for everything else, get an X.
The Cotic will get you from the road to the trail, round the forest and back again with more smiles per mile than a flat-out cyclocross bone-rattler.
I've been across France on mine - it's a joy to ride and will soak up a hell of a kicking.
What ^^ he said.
When is that new Orange CX bike due out? Might be worth a look? (sorry, I know you've already narrowed it down to 2 but this wouldn't be STW if somebody didn't throw something else in there)
The X doesn't feel any heavier to ride than my old Crosslight as far as I can tell.

It's the same deal as the Carbo-o isn't it? ie, picked from a catalogue, with very expensive stickers on?
Will it have MTBer/Nodder friendly geometry with slack angles and a stem in the clouds?
MTB manufacturers are nearly as bad as car manufactures when it comes to 700c
Northwind - No idea, have just looked at the photos but I suspect you're right.
MrSmith - is that true for the X also?

The X is relatively slack, but the head tube is roughly the same length as my similarly sized Tarmac.
Edit: in fact it's 10mm shorter.
i have a 58cm X, it's certainly not light, but it sure is comfy, did my 1st century on it this week so can vouch for it's rider friendly geometry etc
Given a lot of alu cross frames are about 4lb anyway, I can't imagine the x feeling much heavier....

It does have an external headset though.
That's including the headset.
I wish you had been more specific in your first post.
I wouldnt have had to waste my time trying to be a "know it all" then!

That's karma getting you for usually posting with teenage levels of sarcasm... 😉
😀
I love my X,no idea of the weight, but feels very similar to a friend's Trek.(aluminium)
So is there really that much difference between a decent crosser and a road bike? Other than clearance, disc/rack/mudguard mounts. And presumably a bit of strength here and there.
Also, question on the X - how is the sizing? I ride a 51cm road bike, seat and top tubes are pretty much the same as the 54cm X, however the size guide says the sizing is a guide to what size road bike you'd usually ride. ie, a 54cm X has a 50cm seat tube but is named 54 as it's suited to someone who would ride a 54cm road bike. Confusing eh?!
So if I were to go for one of these as my eventual winter hack, should I go for a 54 or try to get hold of a discontinued 52cm? If you own an X, what size is it and what size road bike do you generally ride?
Sorry for derailing thread a little OP.
The orange is gonna be the end of the year apparently,it's agrand.... I'm interested in one
My cross bike is 16.8lb with clinchers. A 23lb cross bike?
Shrugs. Walks off.
My x is a 58, as is my road bike. Cross bikes tend to be shorter in the top tube and higher of bottom bracket than a road bike. I bought mine as a disc braked winter road bike, commuter and occasional recreational crosser rather than an all out cross bike. If I'd wanted one of those I'd probably have gone for a Dirty Disco.
I use a longer stem and slightly more seatpost to achieve roughly the same position as my road bike. While the X doesn't feel particularly heavy it certainly doesn't feel as direct as my Tarmac, and getting back on the Tarmac after riding the X makes me feel like a riding god. Which is good.
Essentially they're different bikes for different jobs, but I'd say they complement each other really well. If I'm honest I also like the fact that it doesn't look like its wearing a nasty track suit in the way most proper cross bikes do. One bike with go faster stripes is enough for me.
58cm road bike, 58cm X
I have a 54 X in the FoD if you want to try it.
Interesting, and thanks for the offer mattsccm. Unfortunately I doubt I'll be able to actually get anything for some months (at best) but might drop you a note when the time comes.
