I know in the past we’ve had a couple of VERY helpful cobblers around, not sure who’s here now though

I’ve started cycle commuting to the new office, having been effectively remote since The Before Times. I’d normally leave a pair of shoes in the office but the pair I used to leave now look like this

Are they dead, or can the sole be stuck back on?

I’m going to say dead, but there’s a good cobblers in New Mills that’ll give you a definitive answer. By the public loos/opposite the bookshop on High Street

Mid sole is looking pretty knackered. Repair is unlikely I think.

Cheers, I’ve used the guy in Mew Mills before so he’d be my first choice anyway. Will take them down and ask, but I’m not holding out much hope

From what I can see, there isn’t even a midsole on those shoes, they look like the upper is just folded under and heat/pressure glued to the sole, with a bit of cardboard glued inside for an insole. If you want shoes that last, (pun intended), you need a welted sole, but that’ll be spendy. But will be properly repairable.
Boots like my Meindle Desert Fox ones are superbly comfortable, but the sole/midsole is bonded on, and the foam midsole eventually just disintegrates, which is very annoying, and expensive to replace.

    Ask Ken Simpson

    https://www.simpsonsshoerepairs.co.uk/

He is amazing at his job, fix a diving drysuit – yes he can, resole climbing shoes – yes he can, repair horse tack – yes he can.

Email him the photo and he’ll get back to you with an answer and a price

Cheers, I’ve had this pair about 15 years, all the shoes i’ve bought since then have had welted soles

I’ve emailed them with photos in the past and they’ve responded after a couple of days yes/no.
