Standard co-codamol prescription + a few beers. Will it really do me any harm. I bloody love beer and i'd quite like to be without pain and happy at the same time.

Any experiences?

How are you on the co-codamol without alcohol? I find it can make me feel odd anyway and the addition of alcohol, in my experience, really doesn't help.

Makes no difference to me. I have Solpadeine Max (basically Co-Codamol with caffeine) and then booze afterwards. Guess it affects different people in different ways. As long as you're sensible I would think you;d be fine...

Not a great idea. Codeine and alcohol is not a great mix

Teh NHS advice is perhaps erring on the side of caution but itw worth listening to

Codeine, dihydrocodeine and tramadol are types of opioid (a stronger type of painkiller). They are usually only available on prescription, although some lower-dose medicines may be available from pharmacies. They are often combined with paracetamol.

Taking opioid painkillers can cause drowsiness and hypotension (low blood pressure), and drinking alcohol while taking them will increase these effects. If you're affected, do not drink any alcohol while taking opioid painkillers.

What an excellent idea!

Think I'll dig out my tramadol.

Seriously it won't do you any harm. You may sleep a little heavier tonight!

Have felt pretty spaced out in work today to be fair. Working at about 40% efficiency. A known side effect, in the enclosed leaflet, is 'confusion', this confuses me.

My vet says it's fine... He is a qualified Doctor. I've done it many times, I did feel drunk quicker, but I am used to strong painkillers. 😕

Just make sure you don't dehydrate too much. I'm not a doctor and have no qualifications what so ever, only experience. 😉

I thought they took all the opioids out of prescription drugs these days, stuff like Tylex/Kapake.

I personally wouldn't plan on using any fine motor skils or staying awake long, put it that way.

I wouldn't take co-codamol without beer to be honest.. stick to the prescribed dose and you probably won't die as a direct result..

be sure to sneak a pint of good traditional rough cider in you at some point to combat the effect of the constipation mentioned above..

there is no "standard" co-codamol prescription, however it's most likely to be in the range of 8/500 to 30/500 codeine/paracetamol.

Codeine and alcohol are both CNS depressants, and mixing the two can cause the depressant properties to increase. All you need to know about that is that it's bad for you, too much will kill you.

But then again, too much water will kill you, so the key is moderation.

If you've had a couple of 30/500 tablets at lunch time today, then having a few beers is unlikely (although certainly not impossible) to do you any real harm.

You'll probably feel a bit shady if you've just necked 60mg of codeine and then go straight to the pub to be honest.

I'm on quite a bit of Oxycodone (similar type of drug to codeine) at the moment for a bust collar bone/shoulder/ribs after an accident on Sunday. Having a couple of glasses of wine makes me feel a bit ropey.

In that case I upgrade my advice to DON'T! If you want beer just take paracetomol

in that case, if they are 30mg tablets, and you have no opiate tolerance, I would go easy on the beers mate.

if anything you might end up coming home from the pub feeling like you are going to keel over.

(i'm sat next to a dr in psychopharmacology at the moment, who, although a bit pissed, is trying to give me a scientific explanation that i'm struggling to understand 😀 )

btw, some of the advice above telling you it's fine to drink on codeine is from people taking over the counter drugs. In the UK, codeine is limited to 12.8mg per tablet OTC, so your prescription is considerably stronger than what they are taking

I'm on the 30/500s at the moment with Diclofenac. A bit too energetic off a jump on fast flowing trails resulted in an upside-down superman on Sunday. I don't find the beer changes their effect but just occasionally (even without alcohol) I get a reaction. Tonight I'm going to ditch the Co-Co and take paracetamol instead.

bigjohn - have you tried taking anti-histamines before your co-codamol? I'm reliably informed that codeine can cause a release of histamine which can, rather unpredictably, cause a number of unpleasant side effects. Quite common, especially on extended or high doses

Haven't had toothache in a while but it has been a good excuse in the past to indulge in CC and lashings of red wine to help with sleeping. 🙂

co-codamol is actually one of the most effective treatments for mild to moderate pain in the world, not the worst thing ever.

Also, Panadol is just a brand name for paracetamol. If you are actually buying Panadol, you're pissing money down the drain since the 15p packs from Wilkos are the exact same thing.

I'm on quite a bit of Oxycodone

I knew a skydiver from Boston Mass. who used to take those for some pretty nasty pain after a bad accident..
When he used to visit us in the UK he would often aquire very large quantities of street heroin soon after arriving.. once his supply of oxycontin had run low.. he would periodically excuse himself to the toilet to go and shoot up heroin.. a friend of mine with experience in the subject watched him prepare a hit once.. and revealed to us that the amount he was using in one dose would last most long term heroin addicts over a week.. 😯

I never saw him drink more than one pint.. unless he'd run out of oxycontin and smack..

yunki - it's one of the most abused drugs in the US. Have a watch of some of the documentaries available about it online, it's brutal.

Addicts smoke 30mg tablets at a time, up to 30 tablets a day. I find this absolutely unreal, 5-10mg of Oxy completely floors me.

It's extremely effective though, much more so than codeine.

I couldn't stomach an opiate addition, it occasionally makes me feel a bit rank to be honest.

Ooh you could do a cold filtration on them and separate out the lovely codeine on it's own.

i've got a friend who used to fill our fridge at university with cold water extractions. also now a doctor. living with a medical doctor, a dr in psychopharmacology and a pharmacist at university was fun 😆

it was eventually agreed between them that if you ever want to know anything about what prescription drugs to take or the effects, there is no point in asking a medical doctor, you should always ask a pharmacist since doctors only do a couple of modules at university in drugs. this caused an enormous number of arguments in my house.

BAD idea mixing codine and alchol KILLED my little brother! you fall asleep and you slowly shut down and die! My little brother was on codine
after a motorbike crash didn't really take them then after a night out had a couple for pain and the rest is history!
