Changing registration of a car when owner is disabled

Long story short, My Mum had a pretty debilitating stroke last year and the car her and my dad used was registered in her name. Dad is now primary carer and really needs a wheelchair adapted car, obvious thing to do is trade in their existing car. But he’s convinced he needs the deputyship thing in place to do this, which he’s been dragging his feet on (and hasn’t really got the headspace for still). But surely it’s as simple as sending off the V5 to register a change of ownership and then he can crack on right?

Or have I missed something? He is a bit of worrier. But they need to get mobile again as a pair.

Correct, just update the registered keeper online. You should be able to do it without increasing the number of previous owners.

He might be thinking of the tax class?

Blue Badgers (sometimes) get reduced tax, so if you want to change a car to (or from) being owned by a disabled person then there’s a certain amount of Post Office faff to change the tax status.

But if your mum wasn’t registered disabled then that shouldn’t be an issue, I don’t think.

Why do you need to change ownership to trade it in!? V5 does not show evidence of ownership or, indeed, prove any right or otherwise to sell it/trade it. Overthinking it.

What snotrag said. I’ve traded in my wife’s car before on a car I was buying. Garage didn’t bat an eyelid.

We had this so to keep insurance we just changed owners name.  We couldn’t insure a car when it was in someone else’s name, or it was really expensive.

Also, putting other drivers on the insurance reduced cost loads.

I had no issue insuring my wife’s car in my name. Insurance company said no need to change ownership if its your spouse, other insurance companies may differ. But if its just to sell the car then as said there is no need.

Mostly it’s to soothe his furrowed brow. He fears the DVLA will drag him to court or social services will accuse him of stealing ‘her’ car.

He is absolutely overthinking it, but at the same time is allergic to form filling and research currently as he’s just become a full time carer in his 70s.

I don’t think badgers pay any tax at all do they, regardless of what colour they are? Or is it not as black and white as that?
