right, smashed window on passenger sider, rear door. AA came out to wrap it up to protect it from the weather last night and promised a window guy would come to my work today and replace the window.

call this morning saying they cant do it today as the replacement window isnt available, can i do tomorrow?

no, i'm in dorset tomorrow... Ok lets look at doing it in dorset. many calls to and fro and the best they can do is 29th, i'm not there on the 29th, i'm back home by then.... ok, let me call you back.

my question is, i've got a lot of driving to do at xmas, and would i technically be uninsured if that window is wrapped up but not replaced? i understand its illegal to even keep a car on a driveway uninsured so surely i should technically still be insured in the state the car is now?

confused, pissed off, worried 🙁

fully comp with the AA, membership with the AA, repair meant to be done by the AA.

24 hours a day, 365days a year service my hairy testicles!!!

i would be careful where i parked it and would remove the radio ....

dont have the insurance docs to look deeper with me here at work, just the certificate.

i'm hoping as the guy said it should be fine to drive with the protective wrap around it it should still be ok under insurance?

soo confused 🙁

EDIt - luckily i can park it at home on driveway with another blocking it in, or at my mums which is a quiet road (might get a cheap car cover to hide the fact its vulnerable, radio out definitely)

Can't see why it'd be an issue; you don't invalidate insurance by driving with the windows down. You probably wouldn't have theft etc insurance when it's parked up, though.

That said, insurance companies are wormy mercenary sleazebags at the best of times, so it wouldn't surprise me.

tis what i'm worried about, as you say driving should be ok... but as its now illegal to even park on private land without insurance i'm worried that the insurance would be invalidated essentially. arghgh

i drove around for 3 weeks including parking in aberdeen in a fiesta with a bin bag for a rear window ....

there was literally nothing in the car but a steering wheel and seats ....i made sure that was clear and that there was no point in going into the car .... i also pulled the positive terminal off the battery when i parked up incase they tried to jump start it ....

good shout on a car cover when its in the drive way !

Aside; You don't have to have insurance if it's parked on the drive. You do have to SORN it though if it isn't insured though.

I don't think it would make the slightest difference to your cover. It wouldn't even have occurred to me otherwise. The theft thing I can see the reasoning of, or if it was a front window. But so long as it is roadworthy, I don't see a problem. It would pass an MOT in its current state.

Disclaimer; I'm no expert...

i'm hoping the fact that i've identified the problem and am organising for it to be fixed is enough to keep the police happy if i were pulled and questioned about it.....

very pissed off with the AA 🙁

Also, if you are insured, then you have third party cover regardless of what condition your car is in. It could have no wheels, seats and engine, but of it causes someone an injury whilst in your period of cover, then you are covered. It's the payout to you that they may try to wriggle out of.

Why would you be worried about the police pulling you over bud? The only reason they might is to make sure that you the driver is not the scally that broke the window in the first place, and I'd be surprised at that. No law against driving a vehicle with a broken window, so long as the drivers view of the road is not obscured. You don't even 'need' a windscreen... (they are damn convenient though, once drove a landrover 30 miles to a paint shop without one in winter, brrrr)

for peace of mind is it worth calling a private company out to just do it?
might not be as expensive as you think.... you could drive to their shop? dunno how much time you have??

I had my windscreen done privately very quickly and about the same or less as insurance excess.

its not the windscreen, its the obscure little window in the rear door that doesnt wind down, next the the main window bit. thats the reason why they couldn't do it today, nowhere has them in stock apart from their central store oop north somewhere so they'd need to get it delivered to the technician overnight 🙁

thanks for the reassurance about driving with it and parking it up guys, got myself in a bit of a flustered state of mind!

I can't see why you'd get pulled over by plod for it, unless the wrapping that the AA have used came free and was flapping about.

I'd give your insurance company a ring, just to be on the safe side & put your mind at rest, but I can't see it being an issue.

You will be insured from the point of view of the road traffic act I would have thought - the car is still roadwothy. the insurance co might not like a theft claim tho

might use some electrical tape to seure the flappy bits this evening to put my mind at rest on the long journeys i've got planned between now and the 29th too.

who smashed the window ? did you lock your keys inside ....

commom misconception is to smash the smallest window as its the cheapest ......its not cause they are the least replaced 😉

i smashed it because i locked the keys inside 😆 didnt mean to lock the keys inside (obviously) but must've leant on the lock as i got out the car then shut the door. frustrating, expensive... but its happened and gotta get over it!

thats a common misconeption that i was indeed misconceived about... never mind, its done now 🙁

my question is, i've got a lot of driving to do at xmas, and would i technically be uninsured if that window is wrapped up but not replaced?

Phone up your insurer and ask them. Let them know that it's not your fault that their approved repairer (i.e. them!) can't replace the window until next week and you want to continue to use the car. They should be ok with that. They may ask you to take some reasonable steps e.g. remove personal possessions from car at night etc.

Have you tried elsewhere, the people with the annoying glass repair ads on TV?

considered autoglass (*hums 'autoglass replace' in my head to finish the jingle*) but as i'm insured with AA i went with them.... the insurance document ambiguously suggested i might not have to pay any excess if i did it through their service. too late now lol.

thanks again everyone, much calmer now its actually booked in and i've got a plan of action! 🙂

Maybe a logical approach here. Would the insurance company cancel your insurance if the window was broken while you were driving leaving you stranded?

As someone previously mentioned, you're always covered by Third Party Only cover regardless of the windows, which is the minimum required under the Road Traffic Act and will satisfy the police.
In theory, you still have comprehensive cover but could come unstuck in the event of a theft in normal circumstances i.e you left the car insecure and the insurance company weren't aware.
It sounds like you have done everything in your power to secure your car so I think you are pretty safe, especially as the insurance company should have notes on their system that you have a glass claim.
Your policy shoud cover you to use any of the major glass replacement services with an excess of £50-£100 depending on policy. I think you could even use a main dealer if you wanted but there would be a maximum expenditure on the policy for a glass claim.
I remember a customer moaning at me once when I worked in insurance as we were insisting that he used Autowindscreens on his Ferarri rather than the main dealer!

50squid excess and anyone can fix it as long as it costs less than 250 in total according to my certificate. i'm happy with the AA doing it all i think, means i've only got one company to deal with if stuff goes wrong and its their own service that the insurance has to deal with if something does happen as a result of the replacement.

i feel cheated by don simon, no smiley with a santa hat? have i done something to offend you? 😛

Phil when you come to stick your flap down i'd advise using duck tape rather than sparky tape, i'll do a better job. However you don't want to get any of the duck tape on the paint as it will leave a creamy white sticky mess behind.

Safe driving

Rusty

I think you worry too much mate, much as others have said, and

24 hours a day, 365days a year service my hairy testicles!!!

Its Christmas, and you aren't able to do when they've offered - plus its not like its a windscreen or front side window... - bit harsh

its the obscure little window in the rear door that doesnt wind down

"Quarterlight" is the word you're looking for there.
