Having previously always not put my bottom brackets in tight enough I went for the super-tighten approach today and have sheared the dust cap. Does anyone have any good tips for undoing the thread that's left inside the BB? It seems an expensive waste to buy a new BB… I've tried clips and plyers but so far to no avail…

If you mean the preload cap on a Shimano HT2 BB, then so long as it's the original one then it is plastic so pliers and/or screwdriver butchering should sort it.

As an aside, I would recommend watching the hope BB installation video on youtube (even if you have Shimano, it's worth watching)

He emphasises how the preload cap should not be overtightened, which was an eye opener for me. Also make sure you have undone the pinch bolts on the crank arm when trying to get the preload cap out!

You can buy aftermarket replacement preload screws on ebay (plastic or alloy), or order Shimano replacement from your LBS.

    Thanks all.
Video is good, I knew I was overtightening it some what!!
Have ordered replacement, I now need to get digging to get the old one out.
