I’m failing miserably to resist buying a car that I don’t need and am trying to work out the best way to insure everything. So currently I have a T5 van and do 10 to 12000 miles a year. So probably want to insure for about 5/6k miles per annum. I’m 70 next year and currently have 6 points on my license (although they will have disappeared by the end of the year) I’m a named driver on Mrs W’s electric and she is on the T5. She of course has an impeccable driving record and is well under 60! She does drive the van as well. The possible/probable new car is a VW Golf GTI Edition 30!
    My thoughts are:
    – SORN one of my cars for 6 months of the year in rotation, but never will have the right one at the right time
    – Buy it as MrsW’s car and me as a named driver
    – SORN the Golf until I’ve lost all points and they have cleared off the record completely (a 12 month wait, but the condition of the car is worth waiting for) although increasing age might compound things
    – Try to find short term insurance if it exists (day by day/month by month etc)

Does the hive have any suggestions or experience of doing this at my age? Last time we had three Carson the go while we waited for one to be sold the insurance was bonkers.
