Epoxy resin. Dunno why, reminds me of childhood even though I’ve used it many times since, and there are obviously many smells I smelled first in childhood.
I read somewhere recently that before antibiotics people used to go out and inhale the fumes of hot tar when a street mending gang was around, to cure chest infections. There may be something in it.
DiMethylenSuplhurOxide ?
It makes beer smell like Eggs . DMS is present in many beers and Lagers at very low thresholds. DMSO is the precursor and is denatured by heat , so extended boil times and warmer fermentations tend to drive it off.
I like the smell of wetsuits , new trainers/shoes, synthetic oil and hot brakes at motorsport events,
cowshit (at a distance !) on a frosty morning
roofing tar / tarmac
ether (most other solvents too, but ether – Yum !)
castrol R (as above with speedway bikes, I assume)
I don’t think anything has ever quite done it for me the way Castrol R used to. Especially in a forest at night.
But that’s not a bad smell is it.
Hydrogen Sulphide (bad egg smell) is in crude oil. Many years ago I spent some time in Saudi designing firewater run off systems for oil pumping stations and GOSPs (gas oil separation plants) where the gas is extracted from the oil. It has to be separated as apart from being smelly it is highly explosive. I became strangely attracted to the smell.
Certain plastic products like kiddies’ play tents, Wendy houses sort of thing
Old fashioned hardware shops
Garlic breath on attractive ladies- it’s kind of exotic?
Or am I weird?
