My trusty old Etrex Legend has finally given up the ghost, so I'm in the market for a new GPS.

The Satmap 10 looks like the business, but would require an outlay of ~£400 when you consider mapping and accessories, so I'm erring towards the Garmin gps60 csx as it looks like I can use my existing mapsource software with it and it also looks like the cradle is compatible with the rail mount of my old garmin.

Whats it like to use? In particular is it easy to pan and zoom on the map display? This was my biggest gripe with the etrex legend, it was pretty slow especially in areas with a lot of detail, ta!

Its a good bit of kit, quite expensive but a whole host of tricks up its electronic sleeves. The zoom & pan is good, its quite easy to set up a route on it & then follow it.

Cheers.

Whats the bike cradle like? Have you found it to be solid for off road use?

Cheers!

Looks solid as a rock. Not cheap though!

I use the standard garmin cradle and bar clamp and it is very sturdy although it may not look that way(where it clips into the slot in the base of the unit it does look as though it could unclip but I've used mine on my road bike and mtb without any problems). The GPSmap 60csx is a bit of a lump but don't let that put you off ,its great. I've got the topo maps loaded on mine and it works fine zooming in and out. The buttons are a bit small and can be difficult to operate with full winter gloves on.
I think they are now alot cheaper than when I bought mine (dammit!)

I cant remember the cost but its a virtually bomb proof bit of kit. However if you have carbon bars you need to pad out the "jaws" where it grips otherwise it will leave great big scratches!
