I recently upgraded from Shimano PD-M540 pedals and installed some XTR M970 pedals and didnt change the cleats on my shoes. I am now finding the left cleat popping out all of the time. I examined he cleats and they look fine, the right foot also holds snug.

I tried tightening up the tension bolt on the left but doesn't seem to make any difference. Should I have installed the new cleats wit the pedals, they look identical?

Also are the tension bolts on the M970's made of softer/lighter metal like Ti? They almost seem a bit rounded and slip a little when using the alllen key (but still move).

the pedal has worn i think?

ive got the same problem with my M520 (deore) pedals, i think i left it too long between changing the cleats...

the pedals are pretty new though, its the cleats that are old. But not sure turning the tension bolt is doing anything.

Try swapping the cleats over on the shoes? Helps even out the wear a bit too.

no shimano do two types:

single release (black ones) and multirelease (gold coloured one)

it general the cleats and pedal tend to wear together - so if your pedals
are very worn new cleats will be a bit funny...

so if you get new pedals with cleats, fit the new cleats as well. - easy to line up with the old ones due to the dents in the shoe

also if you always out your left foot down as stops it will be more worn - I always wear out the left cleat first on my commuting shoes

like replacing a chain but not your cassette and then finding it slips

Must be the left one that is worn then, bit surprised as these are being used for MTB use, but I suppose clicking out the left foot all the time and standing on rocks etc could have worn it, not obviously visible to the eye though.

Will swap over to the ones that came with the XTR pedals and see what happens.
