My office at home is a converted double garage that’s moderately insulated but could be better – it’s 9″ solid brick with insulated plasterboard, ceiling is full of holes for downlighters which def don’t help.

In the winter I use electric heaters but I suspect that this year it’s going to be pretty expensive.
I’ve read a little about diesel heaters and was wondering if one of those would be suitable as they seem to use about 1 litre of diesel in 6 hours which would be cheaper than electric ATM.
Looks like the exhaust is just a 25mm hole which would be easy to pop through a wall.

Anybody use one? What are the downsides?

Downsides are the noise I guess, you get the fan and the tick tick of the diesel exploding inside (or whatever makes that noise they make), but yeah it should otherwise be ok with the obvious caveat that if it goes wrong it burns your house down unlike a fan which would probably just fizzle out.

Get a carbon monoxide detector, obviously.

    I do.

It’s not as cheap to run as you think and it’s wicked noisy.

Probably gonna go back to an electric heater under the desk this year.

Can you run a diesel heater on vegetable oil like you can with an old diesel car?

Sure, but you’ll die of obesity as you’ll never resist the constant temptation to eat chips.

The diesel heaters can be packaged up and kept outside so all you need is the hot air supply hose to come into the building. See the two part video below…not a success in the case of this chap, but I think can be made to work in a more permeant building and set up rather than a caravan.

Though the pumps are noisy there are plenty of people using them in camper vans and the pumps can be mounted outside (probably the case in most camper van installations). But even so there are people out there developing solutions for quieter pump products….
