Been watching a few YouTube adventure videos of late and growing drone use and it’s giving me some ideas for mountain and see shots.

I have an Autel Nano+. I bought it for the excellent image quality and that it is in the sub-250g category. The “follow-me” function is pretty poor but was very low on my list of requirements, which was mainly aerial photography and just acquiring shots that are otherwise unobtainable.

Some of the best videos I’ve seen recently are using the Hoverair, but that comes with its own compromises. Your best option is to watch a few videos and work out what sort of thing you do, and don’t want, before choosing.

Got a mini pro 3 in the Amazon sales at Christmas. Not used it as much as I intended yet. Read up on the rules, they can be quite restrictive if you follow them to the letter.

Bought a Mavic Mini a few years back, novelty wore off after a while although it’s quite fun to razz about! Pretty much only use it for shooting stills – haven’t got time to edit videos & who would watch them anyway!

this on the other hand is awesome. Picked one up few months ago. Use it loads & take it with me on most rides (it’s half the weight of my iPhone & roughly the same footprint although thicker so fits in a pocket fine!)

totally unique at the moment AFAIK, so not like other drones at all, so YMMV but I think it’s awesome. Perfect for “stealth shots” as I can unfold it, launch it, get the shot and get it back in my pocket before my Mavic would even acquire GPS lock 🙂

there was a great deal on it for Prime day but it’s back to regular price now unfortunately.

This is where I am at. I bought a Spark back a few years ago. Really enjoyed it for a whiles at the modern equivalent (DJI mini 4 pro) is so so good in comparison that I’ve nearly pressed buy half a dozen times. But…..in reality I appreciate how often I’d actually use it and then edit something worth watching. And even if I did, what would I do with the footage. It’s like a gopro magnified in every way – the footage you can capture is worlds more creative but the faff factor is bigger too. To think you can document your ride or walk or climb or boat with one is unrealistic – you take it on your walk/bike/climb/boat but the experience of doing that thing if you are trying to film it too is very different.

Like Colin, IF I do end up buying one it’ll mostly be for photography – that feels the sweet spot of faff vs pleasure and time spent editing. Also I can do more with photos than I can with video footage. And there is no doubt a drone’s abilities to get to a location you can’t with a camera in your hand makes you think differently.
