Anyone made some cool stuff from pallets?

I’ve made a rather STW stereotypical wood store out of some long pallets. It’s nothing clever or special, but people are surprised when I tell them I made it from pallets. Helps that it has slate roof I think, I’m fairly proud of it. I’ll post a pic in the morning if I can figure out how to.

What tools have people had most luck with for dismantling said pallets? I’ve just been using a claw hammer and a wrecker bar, slow but effective.

BiL made a decent size gazebo out of pallets. He’s pretty handy with DIY to be fair. I’d struggle making a pallet out of a pallet.

Ive made s slate roof wood store too, also a fence and a chicken hutch.

I have a special pallet puller tool as I get through a lot of them for firewood. Cost £30ish iirc, saves ages compared to crow bar.

All recycled or reclaimed wood – the longer bits obviously not pallets, but afaik everything was scavenged or donated.

My mate turned his van in to a camper using pallets. Sounds crap, looks great. He’s a talented lad.

Christmas trees, shelf units, tables, and yes, log stores. Working at a sawmills helps!

not really cool, but instead of chucking money on seating for the gazebo, i thought i may as well have a bash at making my own out of pallets.

clad it in leftovers from the gazebo, spent a bit on cushions and couldnt be happier with how it turned out.  decided to make a little table out of pallets too…..

it really is not rocket science but sure is fun enjoying the sweet sense of upcycling.

I’ve made quite a few fences from pallets. Just knock the blocks off and you are left with a panel, shape the top with a jigsaw to suit your requirements if installing slats vertically (like a picket), or leave them as is if installing horizontally (like a ranch) and you have a quick and easy fence panel.

The only things I made with pallets were a couple of work benches by a folding machine where I used to work. There were no work surfaces to knock the paper square before loading or after being folded, or doing anything on, so I got a bunch of printer’s pallets, which the stacks of print paper come on, they’re roughly 960x700cm, stacked seven high with a sheet of smooth chipboard hot-glued on top, (the chipboard is strapped on top of the paper to keep it flat in transit), I ended up with two really sturdy work tables that I used for years, and the spaces in between were handy for storing odds and ends in.

If I was going to do something similar at home, I’d pallet-strap the stacks to make them more rigid, hot-glue a sheet of MDF or flooring ply, or else use the original chipboard and seal it, then make up some drawers to fit the spaces in the pallets.

Pallet wood always looks just like pallet wood, no matter what you do with it.

I’ve always fancied a pallet pool held together with ratchet straps ..

I made a bike rack, picket fence style with alternating gaps for road and mtb tyres.  The made a mahoosive shelf above the bikes from recycled plywood so I can stack wheels and trailers and bits above the bikes.

We made one of those at a camp once. 2 radiators, a bit of plumbing and a fire made it circulate hot water through. It was amazing!

I built a shed many years ago, entirely from pallets. Took forever to get all the wood together but it was great when finished. I found they split easily though, & some use those fluted nails which are a bugger to get out.

To get them apart I found it easier to hold them upright & bash them diagonally on the corners to loosen them, then run a hacksaw between each join to cut the nails.

I made  a bar , and in the process of doing a sofa similar to the one above .

Pallet wood store

As promised, a couple of (not very good) pics of my pallet wood store.

Ive done a couple of pallet wood walls in the house – my wife loves upcycling and the rough look of them.

I find the easiest way to take them apart is to bash the blocks and then use a crow bar on the tough bits – a rubber mallett can be used to loosen the planks without breaking them.

I’ve also made some wall plaques and bottle openers –  a bit of fiddes wax brings out the character of the wood.

Always worth running a plane or sander down the edges to avoid those splinter moments!

made a herb garden. didnt really require any modification other than fastening some membrane into the pockets and screwing it to the wall…
