Anyone know Warton near Carnforth?

A couple of questions:

Is the Old School Brewery worth a visit? (I’m hoping for a Yes)

and on Google Maps it’s showing an RSPB site on the coast off New Road a bit further on from Warton Crag. I can’t seem to find anything about this online. Is there a bird hide there?

I have family there. Went to the brewery two years ago and it’s pretty nice. Beers were nice enough.

Been up the crag many a time but no idea about the bird hide.

Is the Old School Brewery worth a visit?

BIL lives in walking distance. Well worth the visit, especially in summer where sitting outside is pleasant (its pretty small inside).

I’ve not been to the Brewery but my cycle club does a “winter training weekend” up there every year and – during a day of thoroughly miserable weather – many of the folk took shelter in the Brewery where they stayed for most of the day, somehow managing to wobble home much later that evening. Although their speech was quite slurred, we did manage to ascertain that they considered it an excellent brewery!

RSPB Leighton Moss has half a dozen hides. I’ve not been in there for years but I’ve ridden past it and stopped at the cafe sometimes.
It’s well known for bitterns, waterfowl and harriers.

The crag itself has nesting peregrines and ravens I think. The RSPB hides off New Road are the Eric Morecambe hide and the Allen hide which are part of RSPB Leighton Moss. I think there’s work going on thee at the moment so although the hides are open, there may not be as much to see as normal – there will be plenty round to see from the hides round at the reserve itself, just a bit further on past the Silverdale train station

Good news on the Brewery front then!

If the RSPB site I mentioned is part of Leighton Moss it seems to be out on it’s own away from the main part in the marshes.

It’s the one marked RSPB Morecambe Bay.

There are two hide there, they are part of the RSPB at Leighton Moss but remote from the main site. The track down to the parking for the hides is quite rough and I grounded our car last time we went (Ford Focus estate), but should be fine with the sort of 4×4 things that people drive now.

Can confirm that the Old School Brewery does do decent beer. Also, if you do so happen to have had one or two (possibly more) of their brews, and you just happen to be on a bikepacking bike and needing somewhere to lay your weary head for the night then the afore mentioned bird hides aren’t locked overnight…

OSB is a good spot, the food from the pop up kitchen is also great. Well worth a visit. The George Washington aka The Bull is also good. Avoid the Malt Shovel, unless you like your pint with side of coke and a chubby welcome.The New Inn in Yealand is also good, but only open Thurs – Sun. 

The track to the bird hides has recently been repaired so is fairly pleasant.

Plenty of nice walks and you can cycle most of the footpaths at night with no bother. You can link up a route up some nice bridleways to Farleton Knott and the Old Coach Road over Warton Crag is good fun both ways.

Thanks for that. I’ve been walking on the Occupation Rd and have run around there when reccying the Bay Limestone Way.
