How does the process work? How would I be best suited to approaching getting a book published?

The book would be tutorials on drawing. I have a few sample pages and an overall idea. I have looked into various companies already doing similar things and how my product would differ from the rest. What should I do next?

Have you looked on the websites of publishers in your field? They usually have comprehensive guidelines.

There are ways to get it done, although small publishers are much rarer now compared to when I started in print. I used to work for a print/publisher who specialised in short run books on things like stamps, and we used to do a whole bunch of different books, things like Ships On Stamps, Printers and Printing On Stamps, etc; they used to get regular re-prints, too, and fetch good prices second hand. Picton Publishing was the company. Anthony Rowe in Chippenham still do short run books, I believe, and there are plenty who work on line. I know someone who’s writing a SF series and has had three books published so far, and she gets them into Waterstones, too. I’ll ask her who her publisher is next time she posts on Facebook.

Ladders look at the wedding present article further down, unsurprisingly it’s got an advert for wedding rings on the page, the power of the Internet… Start a thread on a new subject you’ll be amazed at what turns up!

Now for the question in hand. Re book publishing, you need to be v v good to get a big publisher behind yo. They get thousands of drafts a day, so expect a long slog. It is possible to get it along and self publish on the kindle store, selling your books at a very low cost helps to get you underway.

Whatever you do not pay to print your own books, it will cost you a lot and you’ll feel great until you realise that you still have lots and lots of books unsold years later…

Good luck and don’t get disheartened

I work in publishing. My advice: publish it yourself as an e-book. If you’re not sure about about your grammar, enlist the services of an editor. For such a niche topic, you’ll make more DIY than through the meagre fee of a publisher. Unless it’s about drawing vampires, in which case, name your price.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have a proper look into DIY publishing. The USP of the book would be my method of teaching drawing, its a new system I have been private tutoring with and getting good results. It’s been an idea/dream since I was a child to have a drawing book published and I want to make it happen now. Thanks for the vampire tip, although possibly said in jest, it actually made me realise maybe the subject of my tutorials could be a bit more current and attention grabbing.
