Anyone going to LA in 2028 for the Olympics come hell or high water?

Never been to the Olympics though ive always wanted to since ’84 when it was in LA. Daley, Zola Budd, rocketeers flying over the venue, it was how I imagined America to be. Naive and absurd but do was I.
Probably time I made it, I can also visit a few places where my favourite films were made, BladeRunner, Terminator and well, so many others I can’t even remember but made my 20’s pretty incredible.
I think I need to be there, I am sliding myself to presume some of you might too. I’ll be 59, fifty bloody 9. Sometimes you need to have a look around before it’s too late.
Anyone else feel the clock ticking down? We can row if necessary but a cheap red eye might be more pragmatic.
Make the vaguest of promises, it’s fine, the most solemn of pledges too. You won’t be judged. Just say maybe because in cdo much of life that’s more than enough.
Perhaps we’ll see Arnie cut a hole in a fence as he passed back in time, where Deckard made the leap from the Bradbury or where you have a memory of a long forgotten movie noone else remembers.
I don’t mind as long as you do.
I’ve decided to make it my SDW. I’ll fall and mostly fail to do what I intend to but it’ll be worth the ride.
Anyone else along for the adventure?
I might not be there and even if I do you might have to drag me out of a bar (is Cali a hanging state?) but have you got anything better planned for 2028? Have you really?
If nothing else, it’ll be worth the flight when the surly TSA guy asks me if I’ve any metal objects on me and I smile and begin, “the T1000 couldn’t reproduce, I was sent back to rectify that anomaly. Scan me.”
Just post your tag. You aren’t accountable, you won’t be held to a promise there’s 4 years to plan and galaxies can bidth or fall in that time. Can you?

But pre-registered for the Winter Lympics in Cortina, Italy. Get notified of tickets etc etc,
onehundredthidiotFull MemberNo, did look at it but would like to go to one but it’s Brisbane (nope) the Doha (definitely not for sport washing and human rights reasons).
Might look at winters though.
matt_outandaboutFull MemberSounds like a great trip to get planning on.
It’s a no from me, but then I like to get away from people while I’m on holiday.
roneFull MemberNo, I’d just spend some time getting lost in West of America generally without the Olympics involved.
You can do that almost anytime and is the most amazing landscape I’ve ever seen or ridden in.

Why haven’t you been in Paris? A pretty much carbon free train trip away.
I went to London to watch the triathlon but I’ve been happy to watch all the others on TV.
DickBartonFull MemberI think I’m a bit odd when it comes to this kind of thing. I think I’d love to see the spectacle and watch the best of the best giving it their best…but the getting there and the queues whilst getting to and from and all the hassle puts me right off.
I used to go to Fort William to watch the DH and after the second year I wasn’t enjoying it as the hassle to get there and back and then trying to find a decent spot amongst everyone else – I stopped going after the 5th one (went up with mates and they were a laugh but getting to and from the event just killed me).
I seem to be like that with everything these days, so suspect I’d spontaneously combust if I went to the Olympics where it will be even busier.
I think I’d need to be stinking rich and then use my wealth to get there and get a viewing spot that meant I wasn’t stressing about everything else – but that also feels very wrong.
The atmosphere must be amazing!
Saying all that, your idea sounds excellent as an adventure, so absolutely go for it and make it happen!convertFull MemberNo
You had the London edition in 2012 and the Paris one just now – if it’s been on your bucket list since ’84…..fate could not have made it any easier for you.
I competed in a couple of triathlons in American. Hawaii was relatively normal. Florida (Clearwater) was quite frankly bonkers. The making all the athletes from across the globe all stand at the start line whilst the ‘mercan national anthem was played, some of the spectators in tears and then some religious ejiot was given about 15mins to deliver a sermon and prayers. Much audience interaction. Then the virtually hysterical mindnumbing screaming around the course. Even now ‘good job’ makes me twitch a bit.
I’m sure an American Olympics will be……enthusiastic. And probably hugely home event/competitor centric, but I guess you can say that about all of them.
Not sure what’s happened to me. Once a very competitive person where most of my time was spent competing or training to compete – now, completely uninterested. Which extends into watching other too. I’ve watched about an hour and a half of this Olympics on telly – in previous editions I’d have been glued to it. Just can’t get excited by it at all any more.
FunkyDuncFree MemberNo looks to be a very expensive way to see snippets of sport that you can see better on TV
alwillisFull MemberThat Winter Olympics comment above has sent me off down a rabbit hole! My daughter will be 2 by then, so maybe some of the outdoor XC ski/ biathlon will be a challenge, but ice hockey and speed skating in Milan??….
wboFree MemberI can see your point. I don’t regret many things but not going back to London to watch the Olympics was one, especially as I saw people I knew officiating , and other volunteering on TV to rub it in. So yes, I think you should try to go, and go see all sorts of stuff. Not just what you normally like. Yes it will be hassle, and probably queues, but I haven’t heard much moaning about Paris, and they haven’t been very good for other things recently so maybe the pressure of ‘Olympics’ kicks them into action.
FWIW I’ve done a good number of races in the US and don’t especially recall standing for the anthem tho’ I did at a football game.
johndohFree MemberWe might go, but only because my wife’s brother lives out there, we are due a visit and we could take advantage of the opportunity.
We did the same for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as her other brother lives down there.
We also did Birmingham Commonwealth Games just because it’s down the road 🙂
slowoldmanFull MemberEven now ‘good job’ makes me twitch a bit.
Awful isn’t it?

The flight, the way the city runs, Trump might be president, these are all bad things for the planet/environment (especially trump).
The Winter olympics in Italy sounds much better.
zilog6128Full MemberNah, it’s like Glastonbury, way better just to watch on telly!
spekkieFree MemberI worked at several Olympic venues for these Games and we’ve been asked to quote for the winter Olympics and for LA. Was quite an experience and of course always easier when someone else is providing food & accommodation!
5labFree MemberI went to a few London events and popped into Paris with some last minute €24 athletics tickets on Monday, enjoyed both a lot but probably won’t head out to la unless I’m already in the states for work.
If I were you I’d be buying a bunch of Paralympic tickets for the end of the month and heading over for a weekend.
trail_ratFree Memberif it’s been on your bucket list since ’84…..fate could not have made it any easier for you.
If the LA Olympics were on his bucket list how does Paris or London make that any easier.
But to the op. Having been to LA I’d rather shit on my hands and clap.
crazy-legsFull MemberThe atmosphere must be amazing!
I was working in the velodrome at the London 2012 Games and – much as there had been a lot of negativity in the build up to it – the whole thing felt phenomenal.
And the atmosphere inside the place was incredible – the hush descending on the entire crowd before the start and then the noise would erupt the second the race got underway.
But the idea of paying for it all and queuing and crowds – no chance.

Never been to the Olympics though ive always wanted to
ampthillFull MemberI daw saw women’s mtb in 2012
I thinks me done for the Olympics. I maybe should have gone to see the climbing in Paris. But i didn’t and it was great on the tv

Yes i guess that makes sense to the people who only read the first line of a post.
He would have trouble doing many of the other things listed in the other paragraphs in Paris or London.
convertFull MemberYes i guess that makes sense to the people who only read the first line of a post.
Geez, you lot wouldn’t score highly in a comprehension test.
Probably time I made it, I can also visit
The OP can come back and confirm but….he really wants to go to an Olympics. That’s the main ambition. But if he were to go to the LA he can also do a bunch of stuff he’d also like to do. In a bizarre twist of fate there are lots of alsos at pretty much every Olympic venue. But if I am much mistaken the main driver here is going to an Olympics……a bit like the one just finishing up a few hundred miles away.
thecaptainFree MemberLove the Olympics and if it was next door I’m sure I’d go to something (living abroad in 2012 so missed London).
LA in August however will be grim.
vintagewinoFree MemberI’m pretty keen. I have family there (was actually in LA when the 1984 olympics were on but we never went to see anything) but mostly I just really want to see the park skating event up close and personal.
robertajobbFull MemberI’ll be retired by then (or at least just doing a couple of days a week) so the debate is on whether the money gets spent on Nova Scota or Labrador.
Both are retrievers, both lovely. One’s a bit smaller, but needs more brushing. The other comes in a choice of 3 colours.
Hmmm…
shermer75Free MemberI wasn’t thinking about it but you made a very convincing argument! I’m seriously considering it now
monkeypFull MemberYes. My wife and I will turn 50, it’ll be our 25th wedding anniversary, my son will turn 21, my daughter 18 and there is a chance a close family member could be in it. All the stars seem to align for a ‘big’ holiday that year.

PoopscoopFull MemberI’ll catch up on the comments on here tomorrow!
The hand over the LA was pretty good I have to say. If I make it I’ll be hostelling. I’m used to being the old guy mixing it up with the gap year crowd. I’ve been to some amazing hostels and one very, very creepy one too, in Houston. I’m usually skint so hostels are a good fit and you meet some great people. 🙂
sharkattackFull MemberLA is a pretty depressing slum to be honest. I made a point of seeing some Terminator locations and riding my bike in the river and around some ramps and ditches.
Horrible place though. No plans to go back. The west coast of the USA in general is incredible to see.
TiRedFull MemberOn my way back now from Paris and almost home. Mrs TiRed stayed home with the dog, as it was all last minute based on a single velodrome ticket coming up on resale. So it’s a yes, I’ll apply for tickets, but no going on the off chance like Paris or even London. I can’t imagine LA will be easy to get around like Paris and London.
roneFull MemberLA is a busy sprawling mess – for sure but it’s cheap to fly to (relatively) and within only a few miles/hours of staggering scenery and riding.
wait4meFull MemberBut to the op. Having been to LA I’d rather shit on my hands and clap.
Ditto. Went there to visit a pal when I was barely twenty so should have loved it. But thought it was a hell hole and pretty much put me off returning to the States for life (bar a trip to NYC which was fab)
sharkbaitFree MemberAmerica? No thanks!
Lived on the east coast for a while and, while I had a great time there, I have no desire to go to LA at all.
Much rather spend a bit on a bigger TV and watch it on there.
