I’m thinking of replacing my car and have seen a few VW ID4 1ST editions with the 77KWh battery in my price range. They’re all 2021 models with about 35k miles on them at VW dealers.

Do you like the cars and have you had any problems with them?

Can you fit a 29er hardtail in to the boot without too much bother, I switching from the 308sw and the bike fits in fine taking the front wheel off.

Just wondering what to do as the other cars I’m thinking about are Suzuki Swace which would be a couple of years newer for the same money and have a 7 year warranty but I’m interested in switching to an EV. The other contender is a Skoda Octavia plug in hybrid which I could also get for a similar price.

    Thanks.

I’ve a Skoda Enyaq, which, I think, is the same car. A bike will fit, but I haven’t tried as I failed to look at the interior when ordering and it is very light grey and shows up everything.
I need to get a cover as I think I might be able to get a bike upright with saddle fully dropped, front wheel off and forks in rear foot well.
However, I haven’t tried it as I’m certain the interior will get marked due to my ham-fistedness.
Not a huge help to you, but it should be possible reasonably easily flat on the side.

I’ve got one, no issues with it. Good range, loads of room, getting 3.8m/kWh average over 18k miles (sub 2 p/mile travelling if I’m charging at home). The infotainment system gets shit from reviewers but it’s really not a problem, it’s far better than anything on any other car I’ve owned, yes it’s a bit heavy in sub menus but anything that’s not set and forget is easy to access.

I can get a 29er FS in easily front wheel out back seats down and with a bit of fiddling can get it in upright with the forks in the back row foot well so either 3 seats and a bike or 2 bikes and 2 seats.

I’ve got a Skoda Enyaq which is based on the same platform. A large 29 enduro bike fits with the back seats down and the front wheel off no problem.

I haven’t tried with the wheel on.

I had an ID3 for 2 years, so I won’t comment on boot space. Overall, it was a nice car, maybe a bit bland and lacking kit (for what I assume must have been a near £40k car new), but most cars are and depends on what you’re coming from, certainly I liked the big internal cabin space feel compared to similar sized ice cars (possibly helped by the pano roof that mine had). Some criticize the front arm rests as one example of a cheap feel, but I really liked them, so I guess it’s often down to personal tastes as well. The infotainment system did annoy me. An example is that from time to time the music wouldn’t play and when you tried to adjust the volume to make it do something, the volume appeared stuck on voice volume or something (don’t know what voice, maybe navigation and/or voice assistant), so I’d end up driving to or from work in silence. It went in for a software update, which ended up taking 3 days plus a weekend. I hoped things would be improved, but there wasn’t any improvement that I could tell.

I’ve had both id3 and now the id4, I really like the driving experience of electric cars, very easy, but the infotainment system is frustrating, I also think with everything being on touch screen a bit dangerous, you have to take your eyes of the road when touching the screen, which if you had a phone in a cradle and doing that it’s against the law ? The id4 is pretty roomy and yes with back seats down I can fit my bike in without taking wheels off.

“which if you had a phone in a cradle and doing that it’s against the law”

It’s not. They’re no different, you can use a built in touch driving, you can use a phone in a cradle while driving. However if either of those distract you enough in the eyes of a police officer, then you can be charged for being distracted. Using a phone in your hand is illegal.

ID4 Company car here. 77kWh Battery, Style Edition with decent spec. It’s a pleasant enough place to waft about in, the range is decent in summer but drops of a lot in the cold (first EV, so I can’t say how pronounced that is on other cars.) As others have said, the infotainment is ergonomically garbage. I cannot believe a company with the resources of VW signed it off. Apparently newer versions have a somewhat improved version, but it does appear the quest for a button free, minimalist interior meant throwing any kind of acceptable UX out of the window (not the rear windows though, that requires two separate button presses, unlike all other cars made, ever.)

Mine has the tow bar so the bike goes on the back.

All that said, I’ve not at any point pined after the PHEV Passat it replaced, and I expect I’ll most likely have another when the time comes.

They do look value as a used car, TBF.

I had a go in an ID4 today, took the bike and with the front wheel off it went into the boot with the seats down no problem,  I had a drive and it was nice to drive although the ‘throttle’ response was a bit sharp compared to the my diesel – almost too sharp.  Is it possible to alter this in the software?

The car had some damage to the tailgate though and the paintwork had more marks than I would have expected on a 3 year old car.  A shame as it was very nice in other respects.

I also had a go in a Skoda Octavia estate plug in hybrid which was also nice to drive – @limbojimbo what didn’t you like on your Passat hybrid?  Just wondering as I suspect the engine and gearbox will be shared between them
