been doing a fair bit of xc running over the winter. i find it's good way of maintaining some fitness as i'm out on the bike less. after sunday's run (10 miles) my achilles tendon is feeling a bit shaky, which from reading around is most likely tendonitis. it's not too painful, theres just an uncomfortable clicking feeling (not good)

i was planning to start road riding this week in training for HONC as i need to get my mileage up. anyone had a similar injury and know if road riding will worsen it?

sometimes they say that non-impact sports (cycling, swimming) can be good for injuries. or is it better to rest?

Tendinitis tends to be very painful but if it was what you have then any impact exercise is not good, swimming may help though as you say, riding might not be to bad but stop if it hurts. Mrs has got it at the minute has done since the weekend and wakes up through the night and every morning in agony. One she's been mobile on it for a bit it eases.

It's also possible you've got Sac Bursa problems which gives similar symptoms but without so much of the pain. If it continues go and see your Doc.

only exercise and stretching will help, just watch you don't snap it! i had this for about 6 months, pain when walking after sitting for a while or when getting out of bed, no pain when cycling, was recommended excercises (plenty to be found on the net) but actually was very slck in doing them and it seems to have gone away now!

btw it's sometimes refered to as "weekend warrior" disease as it mostly affects 35 somethings who used to lots of excercise but are now relegated to infrequent long bursts of activity

I have had it before and the reccomended treatment is stretching the calf and doing toe lifts on the stairs. I was told to do them slowly with a straight leg, do each foot seperatly aiming for 3 x 20 on each leg. Maybe start with 3 x 10 and see how it goes. I was told slight pain in the achiles area is ok but dont hurt yourself too much whilst stretching it.
This soon cleared things up for me but ut depends how bad it is to start with.
You should be ok on the bike though.

had serious issues with this last year and i think ive got it under control now

    Stretch – 3 times a day – lunges , calf drops , and touch toes/floor

improvise a foam roller and roll your calves and IT band

when i say serious i mean i couldnt walk after i got off a bike ….

Also had it and ended up with orthotics having been to 3 physios and 2 different podiatrists, who all (bar the last one) told me to give up running/sports that involve running, and stick to swimming and cycling.

Now have it under control but have recently been walking round the house without shoes (due to 4 week old baby) and it is flairing up again.

Was given stretches and exercises as above which eventually got it sorted but was off rugby for 6 months last year

cheers for the replies. i don't think it's too bad but i'm worried that i might make it worse when i switch to the bike – a mate of mine totally ruptured his last year playing football, the thought of which makes me go faint!!

i'll try gentle road riding first and see how it goes

Oh and cycling was generally ok, although I was in bits after the Ring of Kerry, as I did nowhere near enough training so was a big shock to the system

I ruptured mine a playing badminton a few years ago, stretching and swimming are highly recommended 🙂
