The ’84 Olympics in LA, Daly Thompson becoming an absolute legend , defining moment of my childhood and a seemingly endless summer holiday. Happy times. 🙂

At one point, he was the reigning Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champion. Astonishing.

Total legend. I was a training camp with my swim team when I was 18, Club La Santa Lanzarote. Working through a workout in the gym and in walks Daley along with Colin Jackson and plonks themselves down at the next station. Unreal.

Later in hol ended up sharing a dance floor with them both along with Diane Modahl.

My first thought.  I built up a modest cottage industry in high school repairing those bloody things.  Christ knows why they were so ubiquitous, they were terrible.

Daley, Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram (think I have their names right, terrible memory for names)… Remember the back and forth breaking each others world records? That was between Coe and Ovett wasn’t it, Cram too? Incredible.

I think Coe was right, they were the absolute glory days in the UK for athletics. Sorry, just can’t get used to calling it track and field! Lol

Apparently the series started with a 2 part series in ’83 so allowing for what TV was like back then it might be possible that it didn’t air here till summer ’84?

I’m going to say that’s what happened as in my fond memory of that year it did. Lol

I wish I’d known how great my life was back then, it seemed so complex but it really wasn’t.

Perhaps the real key is to apply that logic to my life*right now*… 🙂

Yeah, the bit where the woman (alien) opened her mouth like a trap door to swallow the rat whole. I STILL remember that to this day. Demlcent fx for the time. I seem to remember as the later series l went on it got a bit crap but wow, earlier on, it was a must watch. Back then off course ALL your mates would have watched it too so you could all chat about it the next day. Great stuff!

Great program.  Absolutely amazing when you see that the world’s greatest athletes were training in their back gardens, as per Daley often fighting at life for survival outside of the sport.

However, the T Shirt thing with Carl Lewis was a bit unpleasant. I remember thinking it was funny when I was 15 years old, but not now.

Really enjoyed it, not so much the Carl Lewis t-shirt but we all make mistakes.

Great documentary  – what a period for GB athletes.

The Sun reporter came across as a nasty piece of work.  Daley could be difficult, I’m sure, but so quick to blow his mistakes out of proportion.

Sun reporter was a tool, but praised him in the end.

Definitely a few questionable actions like the t-shirt, and I don’t remember them from when I was a teenager, but came across as all part of his ‘psychology’ rightly or wrongly. Seemed a genuinely nice/cheeky guy and I wasn’t aware of his upbringing which surely explains his drive and obsession.

Will need to look it out…he always seemed to be superb. However, he also seemed.to.drop into obscurity semi quickly. I vaguely recall the other names.of that time – Coe and Cram mainly doing TV pundit type stuff or being the expert voice…Ovett and Thompson seemed to just disappear.
I was never a massive fan of athletics, so more likely it was me, as a 9 year old, just not watching/reading/listening to the relevant stuff.

He said he didn’t really crave popularity or publicity. Which is somewhat at odds with the stunts he seemed to pull off while competing.

See also his sports personality acceptance speech… Coe or Cram would probably have had something rehearsed and polished, Daley… can’t imagine he put much time into rehearsing that one…

Ooh, didn’t realise that was on!  I’ll watch it later on iPlayer. He used to pop in occasionally when I was at Haringey Harriers, I think 1982 or 83 – the coaches would always roll their eyes when he came in because the training sessions would be so disrupted.  It was all very much in good humour and really it probably encouraged all of us kids to work harder.

I’m going with repeats in 1985, or more probably 1986, because I remember getting horrendously drunk on home brew and watching V on TV with eyeballs that didn’t work properly any more. My friends and I weren’t making homebrew in 1984 – only 16 then – but it was definitely before we were legally old enough for the pub later in 88.

And, back to Daley Thompson, I went to see him compete locally at Morfa Stadium in Swansea at some point.

Yea I watched it. Felt sorry for him for some of the racist shit he had to go through.

I hope the bloke who was in charge of his positive sample never continued to work in doping test again, he was completely incompetent in the way he handled his sample. And the amount of Nandrolone in his system wouldn’t have made any difference and it was taken orally and not injected. And as for Carl Lewis remark, he’s a self righteous **** considering he failed 3 test during the 1988 Olympic trials but that didn’t come out to the public till years later. He should have never been eligible to run in the Seoul Olympics due to the failed test.

Just watched it on catch up, probably deserves it’s own thread, awful the attitudes and prejudice he had to overcome.
