5wt oil in Van 36 lowers

The guideline is to use 10wt in the lowers, I have a big bottle of 5wt rock oil, as it’s only for lubrication is it really necessary to use the 10wt, how about fox float fluid?.

The fork is a 2012 VAN 36 FIT RC2 Kashima.

I’d use the correct weight oil, as that’s a rather exspensive set of forks to knacker using too light a weight oil.

Ok point taken I will get some proper stuff then. Float fluid for the seals/foam rings then?

Go to a motorcycle shop rather than a car shop,& try & buy MOTUL.its the best fork oil you can buy,but dont do as the lunatic sez above & put twice as much in !,lol.

Well lets hope so,& if i misread it then appologys,however,theres the odd person on here that clearly think they know what they’re on about,& shouldn’t really comment!,equally however there are some really knowledgable people who are really helpfull,forums eh !!.

I use motorcycle engine oil in the lowers of mine. As you rightly say, It’s for lubrication, not damping. The engine oil clings better so keeps the top of the forks lubes longer and the motorcycle variety seems to have higher shear strength due to clutch duties as well. Of course, all that could be wrong. It’s what I was told, it seems to work and it is cheaper.

I have several sets of forks running more oil than stock in the lowers – it depends on design how much room there is. I have an old set of vanillas that is specified 15 ml and I have put 150 ml in one side – empty fork leg so makes no great odds other than keeping the bushings properly lubed and adding extra weight.

I run extra in mine as well. Only an extra 20ml or so. I checked I got full travel without hydraulic issues before refitting the spring.

I didn’t inply that it would, as I said myself it’s purely for the lowers leg and with them bein Kashima stanchions Fox say there own 10 wt, as they would say that so best get some 10wt from motor bike spares shop.

or mix some 5wt and 15wt…

Just to let you know, I serviced my lowers today and when I took them off and drained oil, there was virtually none in there, there is supposed to be 30ml in each leg so im glad I serviced them no, they are feeling pretty good now!
