    So, start of September, we head to Europe for a month for our honeymoon (1 year after the event!)

    We’ve travelled lots in our motorhome, though only ever done ski trips in it in Europe, so summer trip will be new.

    Any recommendations of great campsites, dog friendly restaurants/areas, or anything else will be greatly appreciated.

    We don’t mind covering decent distances, but first time taking the dog on a trip of this length, so will possibly reduce the amounts driven. Usually tend to stop somewhere for 3 nights at most before moving on, though it’s my first holiday in a while so will be up for chilling for an extended period I reckon!

    We’re not really the type to book things in advance (as this thread hints at!). We’ll be hoping to do plenty of paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, possibly ride a day or two? Maybe via ferrata or easy climbing if we can find a doggy daycare place.

    Places we fancy are south of France (never been)  Annecy, Briancon, Lake Garda, maybe Austria or Germany? We’ll be heading over via chunnel

    September in Alps = a lot of closed trails and possibly dodgy weather?
    I would have thought south to Northern Spain or Italy would get better weather…

    Not too fussed about closed trails as I doubt I’ll ride much, if at all (if I take a bike it’ll be flat bar gravel).

    Hoping for decent weather though!

    We go away in September in the van every year for 2-3weeks. Usually Austria (Tirol, Osttirol, Karnten), Germany  (Bavarian Alps, Black Forest), sometimes France, Slovenia, Dolomites or Croatia. Most years we have great weather.

    Europe is pretty big, maybe limit yourself to a large area, e.g. you wouldn’t drive from Portugal to Salzburg. Don’t try to do too much. We had a 6week trip 10 years ago and regretted moving every other day.

    Try this one – it’s by a river, on a voie vert route, nice town nearby, via Ferrata, an hour south of Caen…..
    Try this one – we were there a couple of weeks ago, sounds like it covers all you are looking for too – next to the river, via Ferrata, nice town an easy walk away, about an hour south of Caen</h1>

    Italian lakes are Fab at that time of year..quietening down, but everything still open.  I’d recommend Lake Magiori and Lake Orta.

    I’d use lachainemeteo weather forecast and adapt my plans to that. It gives you 14 days of reasonably accurate forecast. You don’t want be in the south of France for a late Summer storm or the Alps with the cloud base at 800m.

    Ideas.

    camping le Cadoret at Fouras les Bains and paddle around the sites of naval battles.

    Florac and paddle down the Tarn.

    Gourette, walk up the Sanctus and ride the Aubisque, via ferrata.

    St Jean de Luz. Paddle and swim.

    Ainsa and rent a bike for day then paddle on the lake.

    Saint Tropez. Just because. Paddle plage de la Pampelone famous for Bardot and a WW2 landing.

    Cheers for this everyone. Slovenia is interesting, we’ve never been. Any suggestions for areas to head for should we end up that way?

    @Elshalimo
    I’d be interested to see any 3 week internraries that you’ve followed if you can  be bothered to put a lose one together.

    St Tropez was on the possible lists @edukator….

    I worked on a campsite on plage de la Pampelone through a September and Octobre fixing mobile homes. Loved it. The walk around the coast from Pampelone to St Tropez if you’re a Bardot fan – spot the famous villa. Watch le Viager before you go and walk around there too.

    For example last year we did this in 3 weeks:

    Hull-Rotterdam ferry – Chiemgauer Alps – Kufstein – Hopfgarten – Seefeld – Zell am See – Kinzigtal (Black Forest) to chill for a few days before heading home via the Tunnel

    We bring walking boots, gravel/hybrid bikes and VF kit. Last year no VF for us as I had a shoulder impingement but there are lots to do.

    Look on Bergsteigen.com klettersteig page, it’s a great resource

    Hull-Rotterdam ferry – Allgauer Alps based in Oberstfdorf + Kleinwalsertal – Biberweir to give access to mountains in Tyrol Zugspitze area– Lienz Osttirol for Lienz Dolomites – Mittenwald – Gerardmer to chill for a few days before heading home via the Tunnel

    Amazing stuff here, will have a look. Neither of us have been to Germany or the Austrian Alps so they do appeal. Trying to convince my wife that we can’t fit in France Italy Slovenia Austria and Germany in this one trip ?

    It’s quite simple – you can do all that but I think you’ll be driving every day for multiple hours and not actually doing much of the walking/riding/VF which is the reason you’re visiting there !!

    Others may have different views but spending say 3 or 4 days in each place allows you to explore a little, have a rest day eating ice-cream if you really want to, or need it, it’s more relaxing and prevents you having to move on every day (which quickly becomes a chore not a pleasure).

    Yeah we’ll definitely be doing some relaxing, so the itinerary needs to be curtailed. Not much fun for the pooch if we’re just driving all day either.

    I was going to suggest Zell area too.

    The Seecamp is a great location right on the lake. Short bike ride around into the town.

    Nice gorge walks up in Lofer (also a really good campsite there on the river). They do some climbing type stuff in Lofer too.

    You’re right by Saalbach if you want to do MTB, or there’s a good trail on the Kitzsteinhorn.

    I’m going to look up Zell area now, I don’t know it at all. We’ll have gravel bikes but not sure how much we’ll ride…. could probably do with trying to hire a dog trailer out there….got a rucksack for him, but at 15kg it’s not much fun with him on the back!

    If the dog is good for a 10 mile hill walk the Pinzgauer Spaziergang is stunning.

    Lift from Zell up to the start, walk 10mile along the ridge, lift down to Saalbach, then bus back to start

    You’re welcome to borrow ours if you do head to Zell, we’re here now, heading home some time early September but I could leave it for you to collect at our place (20 minutes from Zell).

    You just need the right axle for your bike.

    Here’s our 12kg Cockerpoo on the way back from Lofer.

    That is incredibly generous @colp! Ours is a cockapoo too. How do you source the axles? Just been looking online….I’m on 12mm thru at the rear I think? (I always get confused over standards!)

    @Elshalimo
    yeah he’d love that…..done loads of big days in the mountains. Where do you stay in Zell? Reading mixed reports about Seecamp…. it’s not cheap is it?!

    SE of lake in a lovely quiet location. 3-4km from town but an easy flat walk or bike ride. Free lake swimming too

    https://www.panoramacamp.at/

    BTW, all campsites near Zell are expensive

    @Tom-B
    – if you don’t have an ACSI camping card get one.
    You get reduced campsite fees at member sites in off-peak periods. Sept is off peak in most places.

    You still pay daily tourist tax on top but if you stay for a few days you get free local bus pass etc

    It’s a minefield. You need the hub type (boost, 142, 148 etc) and also the thread pitch.

    The Robert Axle project is a good starting point. Thule also make them and a few other companies.

    Camping Grubhof is the one on the river up by Lofer, great location but I suspect it’s not cheap
