I’m struggling to get my son insured, the only one so far is £1976 which will reduce to £1771 if we wait 7 days, which is via myfirst.com & AXA.

    Loads won’t touch us:
    AXA
    Hastings
    4YoungDriver
    Nutshell
    CoOp
    Sainsbury

    Money supermarket £3324
    GoCompare £5746
    Asda £7395
    Compare the Market £4491

It’s an ’02 plate 55bhp VW Polo, kept on a drive, used for commuting. Me added as an additional driver. Cars in his name, he’s the main driver.

    Any recommendations????

£2k is the ballpark for new drivers – it’s not really the car, it’s the risk.

We insured our daughter LV on a multi-car policy.

When both our girls passed their test at that age we went with Admiral on a Multi car policy. Couldn’t find anywhere else to get near the price.

Guys at work with the same dilemma went the same way

They used to give me the best prices back in my formative years.

    5 years ago now, so…

We used co-op young drivers. £1700 on a 1.4l turbo Corsa ‘black edition’ (so pretty much a boy racers dream first car). Me as a legit named driver, black box for first 12 months.

First 6 months he hated the black box, second 6 months they sent us a refund because his driving was good.

I know people dont like the black boxes, but I’d recommend it. 5 years in the same car, he’s never had a ticket…he’s a good driver

We used Tesco black box for my son, no monthly payment and only 8000 miles, but we got it for £1250 for 1.4 tdci fiesta. that was in January

    Tesco won’t insure under 21’s.

    Adrian Flux won’t insure us.

    Don’t mind a black box.

    Admiral multicar.
Get more than one extra adult on the insurance.
We’ve paid around £1300 for a first driver, then it’s got confused as all three had permutations of learning and passed, getting a year older (etc).
This on 1.4 75bhp 2012 Ibiza estate in mrs_oabs name and insurance with full protected NCB, two ‘mature’ drivers, no points, full business use.
Admiral give no claims to any named driver – as long as they insure with them. So eldest graduated from Ibiza to Transit camper after 2 years and it cost £750 instead of £1100 others quoted.

Avoid a black box if the car ever does an early start (before 7am), moves after 10pm at night, is used on country lanes, etc etc.

I can’t wait until August – youngest good travelling and I’m taking him off, and he’s an 18 year old just passed driver…

Be very careful with multicar type policies. While they seem a great idea (cheap, right?) all sorts of issues can happen if you have a claim, or the policy gets cancelled for example. This is mainly around the other drivers and what they then need to declare to other insurers.
Telematics seems to work better at the younger end (anecdotally) but don’t be tempted to do too much of the driving yourself – from what I’ve heard the parents tend to load the premiums by bad driving.

Thinking about it ours was Admiral Multi Car too!! Not LV – we’re now with LV though! 🤣

The wife deals with the insurance though – but it is her day job!

Blimey a 60 plate Aygo 1.0 has 69 bhp, and is about the cheapest to insure.

The issue is the Polo’s age and lack of safety features, ABS, stability etc that is fitted to a shootbox cheap Aygo thats 13 years old, and loads of airbags.

Admiral MultiCar here and have had good service for many years. We added junior 2 years ago when he passed his test, 18 years old, west of Scotland, brand new base Corsa 1.3, and first year was £900. He got a speeding ticket on a 30 camera so year 2, which we are currently in, is £1800 🙄. Thankfully he pays for his insurance!

on the other 2 cars, Audi Q5 and Q2, the deal remains competitive and the couple of claims we have had have all been simple and efficient.

Admiral. Put parents on the policy. Black box if necessary.

Eldest started with Admiral, since added our cars as multicar deals.

Both of my boys passed at 17 yrs old and Admiral was the cheapest for both of them. We went for non blackbox policies because they both had part-time jobs that finished late and they were racing and drove quite a few miles.

From memory they both paid around £1200 each (1.2 2002 corsa and a 1.4 2004 fiesta). This was 5 yrs ago for my eldest and 3 yrs ago for my youngest.

Daughter is on her 2nd year of insurance – £1300 dropped to £650. That’s on a bashed up old Corolla 1.6 automatic. But most small hatchbacks were coming out similar prices. If the insurance is that bad, might actually make financial sense to  move to a cheaper postcode?! 😉

However, one thing to consider… we avoided a black box, which added about £100 to the cost. Seen too many stories of the box having a “moment”, eg, deciding you’re speeding in a 30 limit, when you’re actually on the DCway next to it at 70… and the companies usually reserve the right to cancel your insurance immediately if they see any driving they don’t approve of. Not to mention I might drive the car very differently to her! We decided a little extra pain on premiums for a couple of years was better than having to answer “have you ever had insurance cancelled?” with a “yes”.

    Thanks for all the input.

We’re in a really low risk postcode so movings not an option.

Aviva multicar was £3800 for the Polo and then £600 for my Berlingo (I pay £200 for that currently).

I’ll try Admiral next by phone.

That £1700 is looking like a bargain!!!!!!!

    Have you tried Admiral multicar?

A friend in same boat has just gone with marmalade with a tracker/box.  He said their approach to the main driver was different as it’s based on number of trips not distance.  So Son can use for small number of long trips so long as mum and dad do lots of short trips (it detects ignition on off) and then parents are the main drivers.  They are achieving this for all the small running around town stuff – not sure it’s the most environmentally friendly as it encourages them to drive rather than walk to post office etc.

Try Elephant. It’s an Admiral offshoot and has been good for both my children.

Son is now 22 and pays under £500 for a 1.2 Suzuki Swift.

Daughter is 18 and this year’s premium was £1,150 for a 1.2 Skoda Fabia.

Admiral Multicar was £4012 with two other cars on the policy, it cost more to add a black box and adding house insurance didn’t help. That’s with a £1000 excess too.

MyFirst / AXA is looking like the favourite…….

I had Admiral multi car at one point, it was cheap for the first year then they increased the premium so much that it wasn’t worth staying. I don’t think it was worth the hassle.

Don’t have him as the main driver.

Have the mother as main and him as a named driver. Then transfer to him after a year. Way cheaper.

We did consider this but it’s “fronting” and is fraudulent so illegal.

He is the main driver and the car is registered to him, he’ll be commuting daily & hopefully rack up NCD.

I see your sorted now but my lad is 17 and insured with Tesco, think the policy may be underwritten by someone else but definitely through Tesco.

    Indeed.
It’s somewhat mixed to ‘celebrate’ £1850 on insurance! But I totally get why…

My lads just paid £3k, fully comp with a £350 excess on his 15 plate 1 litre focus. He’s nearly 21. Just passed his test the other week on his 4th attempt. He didn’t want a black box or app.

    My Mrs did shop around.
