  • 16mm hex key- where can I find one?

I’ve got a set of Race Face Turbine cranks and I need to change the axle on them. I now need to source a 16mm hex key/socket to do this.. nightmare! I can’t find the part on any of the big providers websites.

I’ve seen a few on Ebay, but I’m questioning the quality..

Does anyone know where I can find one or possibly borrow one from (Newbury/Reading area)?

    2x 8mm will work in a pinch

eBay. It doesn’t need to be high quality. You’ll use it once or twice. Have 11/12mm keys from eBay I’ve used on hubs before and had no issues

    I’d say This is better.

have you got a socket handle?

socket ones are possibly easier to pick up from auto supply shops – that’s what i use

edit just clicked links above 😳

Out of the box suggestion –
When I needed something similar for a Manitou thru axle I found that the external sides of a box wrench I had was the exact size I needed.

I agree. A socket will see you right for this. Far better than a cheap hex key one you start to lean on it.

    Cheers! Will get this ordered.
Why are there 2 sizes listed; Hex Socket 12.5 mm (1/2) – 16 mm (1)

the 12.5 1/2 is the drive of your wrench, 16 mil is the bit size, youll need an 1/2″ wrench, ratchet ot breaker bar to drive the tool- hth

    Ahh, thanks for that.

Or a bit more bodgy, 16mm bolt head with a couple of nuts locked on and use a spanner on the lock nuts.

Was about to suggest what dufusdip suggests

I do it for radiator tails. – which would suggest 16mm key at screwfix in the plumbing section

16mm is an odd size, sure its not 5/8″?

    Daviek- yup, 16mm

16mm bolt head! Sounds like a monster bolt. Not even sure where I’d source that. There’s a Wickes round the corner that may work..

Hang on – do you need to take the cap off? Surely the bolt is only 8mm?

Edit: ah – you’re changing the axle, not just removing them. As you were….

Nope- 8mm cap is for the crank arm to connect to the axle on the DS, 16mm cap is to change the axle on the None-DS.

16mm bolt head …. the hex side … as in a 16mm socket would fit on it.

very common size of bolt on a car.

Trail_rat- the tool has to have be a hex key, a.k.a- bolt head.
The cap I need to undo is a essentially like the socket.
So opposite to a car.. I’ve got plenty of sockets in that size, and annoyingly a 17mm & 15mm hex key.

    no you mis understand .

i mean you need a bolt that a 16mm bolt socket would fit on.

those bolts are common on cars….

youll get one in bnq easily.
