Thinking of getting something like this for my 400d, any good?

Any alternatives?

i'm saving up for a canon 70-200 f4 L. i wouldn't trust a cheap zoom, but if it's just a stop-gap until you upgrade it's probably ok.

"i wouldn't trust a cheap zoom,"

I didn't know they came with personalities now. Will it blackmail me or steal my bikes?

I have a 28 - 300mm Sigma on a 400D - have had some great images with it. Seems reliable etc, only downside I guess is that it's a bit sensitive to light levels at long focal lengths but a tripod/monopod will allow slower shutter speeds...

I also guessing you are a scooby driver going by your user name? I have an RB5 🙂

Thanks bullet.

Just an aspirational name I am afraid.

A Legacy will probably be my next car though. One of the 3 litre ones of course.

one might hope for greater aspirations in life than a car...

28-300 is a big range. I guess for the 400D that equates to about 50mm-500 on a full frame. I'd be inclined to think about the most common shots you do and go for something more constrained. e.g. if you like tripods & long distance work go for something concentrated on the longer end 75 or 90-300? If it's wide angles you like and you want a zoom then 18-something?

With my old 35mm I used 35-85 and 75-300 USM lenses.

with the new canon 500D I kept those lenses. It came with the OK 18-55. And I just got the 'cheap' but surprisingly good f1.8 50mm. Whilst the 50mm is a bit close-up on the reduced frame size, using a fixed length lens is a revelation. Less messing about with zoom and more messing about with framing and focusing.

Peteimpreza - can't beat ascooby, whichever one you go for. I've owned the RB5 from new and still love it to bits 🙂

Simonfbarnes - GFY!

Bullet I would love an Impreza but they are a bit small, especially the new ones. With my old Legacy's and my current Vectra I can just put the seats down and get a bike in the back without taking the wheels off.

By the way a couple of the Legacy's had the 2.0 Turbo engine as per the Impreza, very very fast.

SFB could you not give any camera advice?

TT, I am after a do it all lens for general photography. If I was wanting to be a bit more 'pro' I would consider a selection of lenses.

Fair point about the size. I have to put a rack on the back of mine and take the wheels off the bike if I'm going any distance so it doesn't wobble about too much (maybe going slower round the corners would help but where's the fun in that!)

pete i've got a sigma 17-70 and i love it. it's quite fast for a general zoom lens (2.8-4.5) which means you can get some nice wide shots in darker conditions (like forests). It also has a macro feature which means it's good for up close. you can get RIGHT in people's faces - the dog, kids etc. and the build quality is nice and solid. i fully recommend it. I got mine for 140 on ebay second hand.

your 28-200 that you're looking at is not very wide so not that good for landscapes but if you prefer the longer reach for wildlife/sports etc its ok but remember it's not very fast either so you'll be bumping up the ISO to compensate for slow shutter speeds on cloudy days/indoors etc.

Here is a pic i got of my nephew with the 17-70

Thanks Bomber. The tag on my link is wrong. It's actually the 18mm-200mm.

Just pulled the trigger on the optical stabilsed version.

i've got a sigma 18-200 OS on a 400d body. I think its great. A bit heavy, but works well in lots of light conditions. its not as good as other options if you have a long time to set up your shots, but as a travel lens I think its hard to beat. the middle shot is a little blurry, but its handheld @ 0.3 seconds

not Canon specific - it's just that I thought the idea of applying "love" to a mass produced machine rather odd 🙁

and some would say the same about you 🙂

well i hope you didn't pay a lot of money for it as the reviews aren't exactly stellar photozone review
