Transport Tycoon! Nice one Drac.

Loved that game had a huge Tycoon going massive railways, roads and airports that I could afford to upgrade the vehicles every year. For some reason though it would always crash at a certain point so never got to see just how much my empire would be worth.

- Riven (PC late 90s)

It's an modern open source clone, so has loads of extra bits added over the classic.

UFO Enemy Unknown
F16 Fighting Falcon (Atari ST)
Elite (Atari ST)
GTA 3
Wip3out

Those are the ones that left me breathless at 3am night after night wondering what the hell this weird reality surrounding me was after quitting the game...

Played other good games but those 5 were the ones that were on another level entirely.

Sam n Max - utterly twisted

I also highly rate GTA 3 on PS2, on another day when feeling less nostalic that might knock Sonic off of the list.

Chronologically:

1) Manic Miner (speccy)
2) Deuteros (Amiga)
3) Sensible World of Soccer (Amiga)
4) ICO (PS2)
5) Super Stardust HD (PS3)

I'm playing one now - Demon Souls on PS3 - that could break in to that list even though it's an unforgiving, maddening, makes-you-want-to-throw-it-in-the-bin bastard of a game.

Portal is great as a concept game to show it off. I think they are looking to include it in the next episode of HL or poss HL3.

Its a mind bending thing use, one step up form the grav gun. If they introduce it to a fast paced online DM game it will take some getting use to.

SmashTV on the SNES. I spent A LOT of time playing it, usually at about 3am on a Saturday morning after clubbing 🙂

Gauntlet worth a mention too - I never got tired of hearing "Wizard needs food, badly!" 🙂

God what a great thread... im a total geek still after all these years after my zx spectrum!

impossible to answer but i'll give it a go going in a time line styleee

1 - Manic Miner (zx) - the original classic
2 - Bubble Bobble (Amiga)- jump from spectrum 128k to amiga was huuuuge!!
3 - Tomb Raider (PS1)- amazing graphics and was just such a jump!
4 - Grand theft auto - (PS2) again amazing jump, open world environment!
5 - Call of duty - massive jump again with graphics and online play

again i agree with most of the above...

gauntlet - amazing
populous - first proper point and click
gran turismo - (ps2) wasted my life on that
syphon filter (ps1)

thing is these days the graphics are in another world but most of the games dont have the gameplay the old ones did?

Elite, BBC disc version. You could not become Elite on the tape version. Analog Voltmace joystick, hmm i played that most days for years.

Half Life Orange box

Gran Turismo, can't decide which version. Probably one with the Pikes Peak Escudo in it.

Command and Conquer, probably Generals/Zero Hour +/- some mods.

Goldeneye.

i'm not a gamer but i remember a fantastic game that took my imagination when i was about 16 (19 years ago) it was called slaughterhouse, anyone else remember it? we used to play it in arcade version when the shows (fair) came to town. another one i remember fondly was 1941 a ww2 plane shoot-em up probably from when i was 10 years old. i'd be interested if anyone knew where to download these games for pc........

1) Elite - BBC Tape version, killed how many thargoids before realising couldn't become Elite until I bought a disc drive 🙁
2) UFO Enemy Unknown
3) Ultima Underworld
4) Max Payne
5) Half Life series

There was also a PC flight sim that took many hours of my life where you flew an F22, but also got to conduct the war from an Awacs in a persistant campaign etc, forgot the name though

Too many to choose but this thread brings back some good gaming memories

Not really ever been into 'puter games but I really liked European Air War - more of a sim than a game. Unfortunately the Dell we've got now won't play it though.
Don't think I've played five games other than Space Invaders and Pacman.

Bollocks. I've just remembered I loved R-Type too. Oh, and Stunt Car Racer (good call).

I never considered myself much of a gamer but I'm tempted to bin the wife tonight and break out the Mame emulator on the original XBox for a bit of R-Type and Gauntlet...
