Is it worth spending the £50/£60 for the official router or can I use any old wireless router for this? I'll pay up if I have to but i just seems a lot of dosh.
It's not a router you're paying 50 quid for but a wireless transmitter. And yes, you have to use the microsoft one. Lots of people have tried alternatives (myself included) but none seem to work very well.
I found a wireless client that could be set up to behave like a bridge which worked most of the time, poor reception though. I eventually went to using the ethernet over power adaptors which worked great.
Now the xbox is next to my router so I just use a straight cable.
Dont think their is any reason to use a specific router.
My son has a 360 and he connects it to the wireless router that we have using a Cat5 cable as the 360 does not have a wireless card/aerial, but as far as I am aware their is no requirement for an "official" one.
Samuri our posts crossed.
Youve actually answered a question for me at the same time. I thought it was the config on a wireless ap I was connecting to the 360. If they are all flakey then I may invest in the "official" wireless.
As my router is about 8 feet from the xbox, I run a cable over to it. Wouldn't particularly want to game over wireless LAN anyway.
surfer, are you are talking about your router, the op is talking about the xbox wireless adapter, different things, your router can be anything, it appears though th xbox adapter works best with the official one.
If you can use a CAT5 cable then use that. It will save you money, hassle and improve performance for online gaming.
I've used a couple of different wireless ethernet bridges (sometimes called gaming adapters) on mine and it worked fine. It's a less streamlined way of doing things but at less than half the price it's a no brainer.

The OP asked about a router see my first response.

Wont make any difference, Cat5 up to 100mb, wireless, even the slowest is around 11. Your connection to the internet is likely to be the bottleneck.
