Been thinking about this and whilst unlikely to end up spending £6000 on an old car... the idea appeals massively.

Something like this for me.

Series 1 for me. If I still had mine, it'd be worth over £20,000 now, apart from the fact it would be knackered because I'd have not looked after it for the past 15 yrs

my first car. A B reg.
I want to get one for my boys for their first car. No ECU, easy mechanics, just a coil & condenser ignition. 1L, cheap to insure. And we can work on it at home.

A guy round the corner has an Escort Cosworth - he overheard me tell my lad that "That is what a proper car looks like" and we are quite pal-y now.

Think I'd have a 205 1.9GTi. Bloody mental. Less chavvy than an RS Escort, less fatal the a Renault 5 GT Turbo

Could never understand why folk fitted twin 40's on a 2 port head. I always got better power and road tractability from a HIF44 coupled to a standard metro plastic airbox. Dyno work was always done by Andy Preston at GVR racing

Soon as I saw the thread title I though of an old Escort!

Either that or a Lambo Countach 🙂

As a second car maybe, my first car was actually a Mk2 Golf GTi 16v, I was very lucky, and very poor because the insurance was nearly £200 a month.

It was fun to drive, but these days the roads are so busy, even at the weekend I'm not sure I'd get to drive it hard at all, it's one thing to act like a bit of a berk when you're on your own. Not to mention compared to modern cars, they're not very fast - a boggo standard hatch back will run rings around it.

As a car, well it broke down a bit, didn't like to start when it was very cold, the brakes were massively powerful, but without ABS and 15" wheels they would lock easily, the steering was a 2 man job at low speeds and it was very cold and misty in winter.

So yeah, I'd like one, but I'd sort of keep it in the garage and look at it, maybe go for a drive when all I had to do was go for a drive, it was a pain in the arse to drive 20 years ago it would be hell now.

My first car was a 1978 ford fiesta, two tone cream and dysentery brown. £150 lasted a couple of months.

2nd car was a 1982 Mini Mayfair in Brown £150 lasted a couple of months.

3rd car was a 1986 Fiat punto in undercoat blue. I spent money on this one! £650 and was actually good for a year or so.

4th car was a 1987 fiesta bought for £350 sold for £600. Only car i've ever made money on.

Would I buy a car of my youth? NO!

Are we talking poster cars (obviously the Countach) or first cars (a perfectly serviceable Polo)?

I'm quite tempted to get one of the first "nice" cars I had (Mk1 Audi TT) as they are under £5k now.

My brother had one of these (but his was black with an A-team style stripe down the side!).

1800cc engine, small hatchback, 4WD - it went like a rocket, and left many a hot-hatch of the day trailing behind when 'making progress' on country lanes!...

[img] [/img]

I always wanted one of these...

Nostalgia.... I had a Mk1 Escort Van (hand painted) for my first car. It was crap as are most of the above in comparison to modern cars. My van had drums all round and of course no power steering, air bags etc etc. I wanted a Mk1 Mexico but couldnt afford the insurance 🙁

Had a 1.6. Would love to have it again, although I suspect it would quickly become a money pit.

Otherwise also lusted after a Delta Integrale, although I suspect that would also be a money pit.

Always weirdly wanted one of these too:

I did! But a lack of enthusiasm for lying under cars and pouring money into them meant that the car was neglected in the end. Sold it for a song but at least it wasn't rotting in the driveway.

Great fun while it lasted though. Love driving Capris.

My first 'real' car after having a old T reg Mazda 323 to learn in and generally faff around with L plates.

Mine got written off after being hit by a drink driver, but if I could find one that had not rusted apart I would, great little fun car plus I could actually afford to run it now (not like when I was 18).

I've had the Escorts, Fiestas etc and actually only got rid of a Mk 2 Polo and Mk 2 Golf which had been off road a couple of years ago.

Reason I got rid ? I'd got a modern car and, even just driving them at weekend etc, it still felt like driving a piece of.......compared to how a modern car drives / feels.

I recently picked up and drove a 1985 E28 5 Series 525E as a mate was using it as his wedding car.

It was so much fun to be in an old car, it ran really well and handled as you would expect an 80's motor to handle.

Would I swap it for our A3 sport back on a 64 plate probably not but would I have one as a second car yes!

It had the beginnings of light rust on most seams on the wings and bonnet but no proper rot.

I owned my first car for 20 years. I only sold it earlier this year. It was a 1200 1972 VW beetle, but that I used to drag race. Various 2276 and 1915 engines in it over time. Gutted i sold it, but being realistic old cars are horrible to drive.

I cant think of one car from my child hood I would want to buy for £6k. The only one I can think of remotely is the Mini

If I was a bit older it would be a Mk1 Escort, but there is no way £6k would buy one...

The original Mk1 MR2 was a good car too I guess.

Oh yes.

I'd have a nice example of my first car in a heartbeat.

Sadly, I don't think there are any nice ones left and a fully restored one would be over 10 grand.....

[img] [/img]

Mine had a red bonnet, blue hatch and a mix of red and blue wings.

I had to get rid when the floor fell out and I hadn't the cash to fix it

I'd have another mini, or a 205gti, and maybe even another Defender (assuming it was on a galvo chassis).

Not owned one (yet), but have always wanted one of these. Helped no doubt by their racing performance. I was reasonably youthful when they first appeared too.

If I was to have a car I've actually owned, it'd be the mighty Cavalier.

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/favourite-older-cars/page/2#post-7291063

Nearly realistic objects of desire around that time was the Calibra or a Capri like the one on the first page.

I saw a Citroen AX GT at a recent classic car show that was exactly the same* as the one I had back in 1995.

[img] [/img]
I got all dewy eyed over it for a minute or two before remembering the following:-

The ride was like going down the side of a quarry in a tin bath.

The handling and especially the braking in the wet was terrible.

Bits constantly fell off it.

It broke down frequently. I had my RAC 3 call outs every year that I owned it. In contrast The Mighty Vectra only required rescue once in 5 years (alternator) that wasn’t entirely down to me. The other two were as a result of parking facing up a slope with no diesel in the tank and ripping the under tray off the engine in a massive pot hole (on consecutive days). My SMax hasn’t so much as burped in 3 years / 40,000 miles.

There is no way that I would put my family in it. Even if I didn’t crash it myself I wouldn’t want to get rear ended by somebody in a bigger and more rigid vehicle.

After doing a thousand miles in it over the course of a week’s holiday in Cornwall me and the missus bought a new car the day after we got back. Unfortunately it was a Fiat Bravo.

It was a hoot to own though. Something I’m glad I did when I was in my 20s but I’d not one to have one now.

*Apart from this one was mint and mine was ruined… by me.

Me and a mate bought an escort Mexico for £250, guy wanted £500 but the exhaust was really rattley, on our second visit, amazing what a handful of gravel can do.

We eventually broke and sold it for bits, made a profit, last part was the scrappy taking the shell for £50.

So wish we'd kept it now.

Interesting...

First car was one of these, J reg. Cost me £200 and I put nudge bars front and back and lots of spot lights on the front. You could open the door and start it with a flat head screwdriver. Think I managed 75mph out of it one day.

[img] [/img]

Then one of these when I was 19, both drove like go-carts, corned very well, both very underpowered. I had 3 of those X1/9s, liked them for some reason ... would I have any now, NO

[img] [/img]

Not my photos but nearest I could find 🙂

Not mine but my grandad had a blue Vauxhall Viva, a HB I think, we loved that car... I'd not want to recreate it though- I want a 2 door, maybe a HC or a (non-droop) Firenza/Magnum coupe. Little tiny pony car. (there was a factory smallblock v8...)

By the time I have space and money to build this stupid dream car, they'll all have crumbled to dust though

I did and after a 5 year restoration I've never looked back. I just love the smell of the cheap vinyl as things start to get warm - it takes me back to my youth! Yes breakdowns aren't fun but it is usually obvious and can be mended at the roadside. I will be buried in my golf if my son doesn't want it!

Here it is obscuring the view of my mates mexico 😀

Sebring red MkI Mexico 😀

Bought one in 1987 when I started work and it's the one car I have always regretted selling, (for an XR2!). Did a search last year and it's still 'alive' but now painted white.

A friend of friend has one and I've told him to come and see me first if he ever wants to sell it.

A lot of love for Mk1 Golf's, here is my old one. Built up almost 20 years ago to exactly what I wanted.

It was my dream car and everything done to exactly my way of thinking. Single wiper, relocated mirrors, flush rear end with Zender 3 piece spoiler. It had a perfect grey and black interior and tinted glass all round. Best of all, 2ltr 16v engine and cable change box. Wheels have changed as I had G60 BBS wheels but not far off.
Let it go at the time for a Mk3 VR6 (which was faster and sounded better) but have missed it since the day it went.

Had the chance to buy it back last year as it came up for sale on Ebay. Now I love this car, it was my everything for 18 months when I was 19/20.

Sadly the owners since have destroyed it. Turned into a track car so the interior was stripped, roll cage installed, big bucket seats and cut out parts of the dash meant that to restore it back to its former glory would have meant too much. I was gutted!!

Still my fave car ever

My first car was a 1961 mini, I bought when I was 16 (in 1977) from a car mechanic. It had an MG 1100 engine, wide wheels and flared arches. I had it sprayed black, but not before I drove it around (illegally) for best part of a year with its red oxide primer coat.

Anyway, despite now owning some great cars since, inc my current RS4, I had more fun in that car than any other. I'd love another one.

Loving looking at the pics of the old Polos, Golfs and of course the lessor Hot Hatches 😉

My Kid Brother had a G40, I was always pretty envious of it, my Golf was slightly quicker, but pretty run of the mill compared to that, but I still think nostalgia is best left in the past.

Hmm, sort of tempted (pic not mine, but very similar). It was a bit different and fun to drive, but the rust, oh my gosh the rust.
