Hopefully doing this with a mate next week;

And we have to choose a charity.
I wouldnt mind choosing Mountain Rescue, but I feel more people would donate towards a more "obvious" cause, such as for the people in Haiti.
So, any thoughts on good charities to donate to? Is there a main Haiti charity at the moment? Had a quick search, but just seems to be loads of different ones? Any thoughts on which use donated money the best?
And, if anyone would like to donate towards us (all donated money will go to the chosen charity), that would be much appreciated- please drop me an email or leave a comment 🙂
Thanks, Duane.
NSPCC
Shelterbox. No funding whatsoever from the DEC and they've probably made more difference in Haiti than any other charity.
Oxfam, Red Cross or Medicins Sans Frontiers are all charities that are having a big impact in Haiti (and other disaster areas) and certainly in Oxfam's case will be heaviliy involved in the redevelopment of the country once all the earthquake headlines die down.
Not Haiti related but http://www.steppingstonesnigeria.org/
Run by a good friend who is very dedicated and very little of the money is spent on admin/fundraising etc - as seen on Dispatches.
I donate to the RNLI, RDA, RAFBF, Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.
I worry about "charities" such as Oxfam in that they have become almost too big and too bureaucratic and less about actually doing stuff. There's been a lot of criticism of the "meeting culture" of many of the larger charities in Haiti for example. Sitting aroung having meetings and committees rather than getting their hands dirty. Difficult one.
I agree regarding MSF though. In some of the more interesting parts of Africa, they're the first in and last out in almost all cases (Such as Liberia when things went a little lively there)
shelterbox is one of my fav's, its local to me and does amazing work considering its a charity, no overly paid ceo's etc. just hard working people and a Lot of volunteers who help out, one of the ladies in our cycling club goes out and helps with them, brillianbt charity!
i normally give to the rnli as well as they are the next best for me, being a water person since early years they are the most likely to be needed to help me! lol, or, the local surf livesaving club!
