I'm having a minor problem, I'm trying to learn wordpress & eventually I'd like to try and get my head around some coding (for 'fun' not for profit) but I'm now confused on what appears to be a simple task (and probably is!)
This is my issue:
Self Hosted Wordpress site is: http://www.oldghosts.co.uk/ and if you click that it takes you there, but I think I may have (had) a redirect from my original domain provider (UK2).
This, I think, now points/redirects to my Laughing Squid server where my wordpress site is installed (not in top level, but in a sub folder).
now in the OldGhosts admin panel, in GeneralSettings it has the following:
WordPress address (URL) [ http://www.oldghosts.co.uk.php5-16.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com ] now this takes you straight to the site but clearly its the original testing link.
then there's the other box which reads:
Site address (URL) [currently this: http://www.oldghosts.co.uk.php5-16.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com ] (Enter the address here if you want your site homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress.) now in here I'd like it to have http://www.oldghosts.co.uk/ as that would make sense and also hopfully it will stop the problem I have with registering my site with google, something that despite putting the google html doc in every folder I have still cannot be found by them?!?
but, when I change the entry you can only access the front page, all the other pages just redirect to the front, which is both odd, annoying and shxt.
is there a simple, idiot proof solution to this? can anyone help? I really do not want to have to rebuild my site again!!
I don't know if it helps, but this - http://www.oldghosts.co.uk.php5-16.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com - isn't a URL at oldghosts.co.uk, it's a URL at websitetestlink.com.
I *think* (flying blind) that what you'd need is,
Wordpress URL = www.oldghosts.co.uk/subdirectory/
Site URL = www.oldghosts.co.uk/
... assuming that oldghosts is already pointing at the server where your files are. Is there a direct address for this laughing squid server?
hmm, I'm indeed confused, is there anyway that I can see where I have configured www.oldghosts.co.uk to direct to? the UK2's site back end seems to be broken, it only displays in unformatted text and as such seems to be missing a fair amount of content! (such as the domain redirect page!!)
ah!
yes www.oldghosts.co.uk appears to be redirecting to http://www.oldghosts.co.uk.php5-16.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com /p>
yet my laughing squid account says that: www.oldghosts.co.uk is clearly not, when I try to put in: www.oldghosts.co.uk/web/content/ to the UK2 domain redirect it fails as it won't let me redirect to a sub directory on my own domain (kind a obvious I guess)
If I remove the entry for the diversion www.oldghosts.co.uk takes you to a UK2 parking space, so am I right in thinking I need to transfer the name servers to get this fixed?
Ah! I see you are using a frameset!!!!! Ideally, I don't think you should be doing, for lots of reasons.
Assuming the hosting package you have for http://www.oldghosts.co.uk is primarily for the oldghosts site.....ideally....
Then you'd have wordpress installed at the top level - so that the index.php page sits in the root folder.
Then instead of having redirects and framesets you set the nameservers on the domain name to point at the hosting package.
Then google and all the world will love you.

so would that warrant the follow outburst:
"bollocks I have to rebuild the whole ****ing thing again!", "oh and dick around with the nameservers!"
...so would that warrant the follow outburst:"b*ll*cks I have to rebuild the whole fxcking thing again!", "oh and dick around with the nameservers!"
Maybe 😉
You did ask.
Rebuilding isn't that bad.
You can export all your content into an XML file (see Tools - Export). You can then import that when you've rebuilt.
Think of all the experience you're gaining? 😉
SB
yes, its all good experience....
****ING HELL!!!!
and the nameservers thing, thats going to be a proper ballache, how do I sort that shizzle out?
It should simply be a case of editing the domain record for http://www.oldghosts.co.uk /p>
and updating the nameservers to those of your hosting company (you might have to ask them what that should be - something like ns.whoeverhost.com, and ns2.whoeverhost.com.).
Armed with the right info' it's a 5 minute job.

MrNutt I've moded you posts as you were using swear filter avoidance but you'll see some words are allowed if used in the right context.
I've just had a cream egg so in a good fettle but remember avoidance can lead to a ban.
