Yep, I would say that was luck as there must be quite a lot of possible words for the second line however good your first word is.

It was very lucky! one yellow in the first word, then got it.

Do it for next 7 days and get it on second go everytime then you might have something

American spelling of word today, one to watch out for as it is an American game I suppose.

My Mrs was less than impressed that it was american spelling, especially as it's hosted on a .co.uk so you'd have thought english spelling

After Twitter discussion, I've landed on:
ROUTE
SNAIL
for my first two goes. Gets you all the vowels and both words are in the word list so there's a chance of getting lucky.

so even if the word was CREST say and you had a few letters in the wrong place, youd still plump for SNAIL rather than pick another word containing those letters?

No, they are 2 words with no mutual letters, so if you get nothing with the first, the second works well.

Only done a couple, struggled with today's until I realised it's using American English!

With it being American English I suppose TIRES is another good word for first guess!

It depends how many letter I got from the first word, and what/where. I find that ruling in/out another 5 letters is useful.

Today pretty much as per @blokeuptheroad, without the fourth line.
A good way to spend the time waiting for the kettle to boil and coffee to steep.

I do it every morning while drinking my morning brew, really helps kickstart the old grey matter and give s me time to think the puzzle through.

Agreed, got there in 5 but having got the first 4 getting the fifth one right within 6 just came down to luck.

Maybe a lucky guess today but nailed it in 3
