Wood Green is North London, if you don't die, you'll be very miserable.

Come down south and avoid all areas north of Marble Arch.

Further to Ernie's comment, don't even dream of going South of the moat. Or East of the City.

😉

no decent mtb up there. you need to be W/SW/S to have quick access to swinley/north downs/surrey hills

Epping isn't so far away. However, I would only bring a road bike.

There are worse places, tbh. I'm just down in stroud green / crouch end borders. Parkland walk, queens wood/highgate wood, alexandra park are OK for a quick spin but they can be busy with walking types, I tend to just go for a run instead. Epping forest isn't far for longer rides and you can do a chunk of it along the canal.

These guys: http://www.thetrax.co.uk/ will be just down the road. Haven't got involved with their Lordship Rec pump track etc project (much to my shame, but I was away all winter) but they organise rides elsewhere too.

I live close by in Crouch End.

Epping Forest is pretty close and is dry and dusty at the moment but will turn into gloop with the slightest drop of rain. The riding there isn't brilliant but fun enough for a spin.

A cross bike is best if you have one. Faster to get out of town and onto the bridleways in Herts. 25mins or so and you will be out into country lanes.

Wood Green is alright, not great, but ok
not far from some nice places to eat and drink in Crouch End and Muswell Hill
riding wise, you'd have to make your way downhill to Waterloo to get out to the South West for anything decent off-road - you can get the train from Ally Pally to KingsX and then it's a 15 minute cycle ride to Waterloo then a 45 minute train ride to Dorking or similar

i disagree, its a shite hole, personally i'd refuse the offer of accomodation there and look elsewhere, i've lived near there for 40 years and worked the streets around there the last 10 - its a dive

on the plus side - good 24hr transport, has a huge shopping area, cheap low quality deep fried chicken on every corner

as for riding - SS or CX bike is all you need - Epping Forest, Broxbourne Woods, various parks in Enfield

i suppose it depends on where you live now, if its somewhere in Sierra Leone then you'll be doing alright, if however your currently in the English countryside your ****ed

good luck

Your cherished bike will not be safe in Wood Green imho

I used to live nearby in Enfield and would refuse to move to Wood Green unless you really really need to. Enfield fine, Wood Green steer clear it's an absolute sh*t hole overflowing with scum (yes cheap chicken though!)

+1 thetrax

Don't know where you live now though..

If you're feeling brave then good luck cycling to Epping from Wood Green but carry a big pump that doubles-up as a kosh.

Might sound a bit doom and gloom but I'm afraid it's realistic

oohhh apparently its in enfield rather than wood green 1.2 miles away - could make a big difference

I may live through this 🙂

you can cycle to loughton and get the tube into the middle of epping forest if you dont wanna cycle all the way

i also lived near woodgreen

its a proper dive but if you walk south down greenlanes youll reach the salisbury arms which has a brilliant selection of imported beers some quality stuffed animals on the walls and an 'eclectic' clientelle
and if your luck a band on in the function room

worth a trip to ally pally for views over the city too

Green Lanes is the best street in London. A dirty gorge of a road, unpretentious, full of life. As a city should be.

Walk down to salisbury arms like kimbers suggests, and follow it up with a yoghurt adana at gökyüzü, a couple more minutes down. The turkish food is really first rate.

If you cycle to Loughton from Wood Green you will have gone through Epping Forest?

Further to Ernie's comment, don't even dream of going South of the moat. Or East of the City.

Flashy is an arse, but a fairly benign arse compared to this:

Wood Green steer clear it's an absolute sh*t hole overflowing with scum

What do you mean, 'scum'? Do you mean poor people? Or Darkies? Or both?

'Overflowing with scum'. Hmm. What an incredibly ignorant and bigoted view. I feel sorry for you, Enfht, I really do.

Don't listen to all the snobs, listen to me instead I know more than them.

I lived in Wood Green for a short time, and it's a little bit 'suburban', but not quite as boring as places further out. Plenty of peoples of different cultures and that. Green Lanes is excellent for yer efnik foods and stuff. Little bit 'rough' by comparison to places like yer Muswells and yer Crouch Ends, but not too bad. Nicer than bits of Tottenham, that's for sure. Like any big city, you've got to be on your wits, but you'd expect that anyway.

Makes me laugh when people are frightened of a place like Wood Green. Jeeze, stay in yer bubbles, don't ever venture outside where you might actually see a bit of real life going on, eh? 🙄

Epping isn't so far away. However, I would only bring a road bike.

Don't listen to him he's a roadie and therefore disqualified from any discussion as to the correct choice of bicycle. Epping is good in warmer months for a good blast round the forest, but too muddy to be enjoyable when it's colder and wetter, that is true. But you've got loads of cycle lanes and paths, canals and that; a 'racing bike' style contraption is far too limiting in London. something like a hybrid is the best choice if you really can have only one bike, but an mtb does at least have the option of sticking slicks on for commuting. A tatty hack bike is essential if you wanna lock it up and leave it anywhere; owt else will probbly get nicked or stripped. Tattier the better.

I lived in Manor House for 2 years as a spewdent. Quite enjoyed it but it's crap for most riding apart from on a BMX so if you haven't got one, buy one and a really really really good lock.

wood green = certain death.... personally I wouldnt do it - used to cycle through there a couple of times a week as well as go to cinema there as I lived in Palmers green. not a comfortable place after dark tbh, but not as bad as some.

enfield - much better, - I have to say that, as I live there. stay west of the a10, ideally close to enfield chase stn/ the ridgeway rather than down near enfield town (its the nicer bit). message me if oyu want some detailed area advice on what a particular road is like. Pubs are a bit pants - the stag is ok, wheatsheaf used to be a good old man pub but has gone downhill. its got to be good, its now got 2 waitroses in 5 mins walk of each other - new one is 70 steps from my front door which is great! riding is as other say not scintillating but you are out in the green in about 10 minutes. epping ok. go further out for round st albans way, some ok bridleways linked up by roads nr radlett/london colney/hatfield.

All I asked is what you meant by 'scum'. Which you haven't answered.

As for predictability; you can always be relied upon for a bit of ignorant bigotry.

Strangely, the 4 recent Bank Holidays have been lovely and sunny. So, does that mean I'm actually not all that predictable then?

One of the best years of my life was in Tottenham! our landlord was a Turkish chap who owned a kebab shop in Wood Green, we'd go there to pay the rent and mooch 'round the shops, cinema etc. It's nowhere special, but it's no shocking hell-hole either.

I'm just curious as to what he meant by 'scum', really...

I think Dalston is better though, don't you Kev?

Mmm.... Arcola St Kebabs..... 😉
