So, I got a new laptop with Win 8.1 (actually quite liking it). Anyway, it comes with Windows Defender (which I now understand is the equivalent of Security Essentials). Is Defender protection enough on it's own without any third party anti-virus programs?
ta
Yes, so long as you keep everything up to date and don't click on stupid things.
Someone will be along shortly to tell you to install Linux.
Had 8.1 now for 2 weeks, hated it at first but am coming round to it now I've worked it out.
Did have to install a start menu though 🙂
Don't install Linux. Use Windows 8.1, as it has a very decent kernel but an absolutely dire interface. Install Classic Start Menu or similar to make it useable.
Or get a mac 😈
When i click on start it open up the tiled desktop. First hours or so I hated it, now starting to get my head around it (and removing all the bloatware) I'm starting to like it.
still use McAfee, cant be too careful and its cheap considering the price I could pay by being hacked.
Is McAfee any better? I only ask because, despite having defender on there they still gave me 3 month free mcafee. Do you switch off defender or can you have two running along side each other?
Classic start should be unnecessary in the coming update, the old interface is coming back.
If you use Spotify you'll be disappointed though, still no support for 8.1 as far as I know.

There's two phrases you don't often see in the same sentence.
can you have two running along side each other
Don't, they'll fight each other. In practice if you have McAfee running then Defender will switch itself off; best to just remove McAfee and Defender should then turn itself on - check that it does in Action Center.
Yep, defender will be fine. Keep it patched up to date and you'll be reet.
The speed we're seeing malware evolve at nowadays I'd say most AV solutions are window dressing for the most part. Keep your machines patched and you'll have the best protection you can get. Back that up by behaving sensibly, not clicking on links in emails, don't hang around dodgy websites and you'll be fine.
Personally I'd recommend a sandbox product like sandboxie as your second stage of defence especially if you spend a bit of time on the ahem, darker side of the internet.
Took me ages to work out how to get rid of that stupid two finger scroll thing on the touchpad.
Who decided that after years of one finger scrolling we all need to use two fingers in the opposite direction? (There's a joke there somewhere).
I've got a macbook. The finger scroll things have been there for years and they're way better than just one finger stuff. There's loads of different combinations and for me they're absolutely the best part of owning a mac. So intuitive. Once you know what they are it's great.
