And the Royalty in Bowness - Wurlitzer performances on some afternoons!
Whats good to do?
Run away as quickly as possible !
Windermere used to be the quieter end of the Lakes compared to Keswick, however now its horrible, too busy and almost a bit Blackpool ish.
If the weather stays fine, just get some walking boots on, get up early and head up into the fells. There are so many little tarns and streams for paddling, amazing views, and even a bit of peace and quiet if you get off the most popular paths.
Windermere's not so bad, especially with kids to feed and entertain.
Ferry to Ambleside, see the waterfalls and go to the fantastic cake shop next to it.
Kayaking. Grizedale- biking. Grab a 1:25k os map and get walking.
Kayaking sounds good 😀
Spend the whole day on Loughrigg - walk as much as you want, explore the caves, paddle in Rydal or the tarns and streams.
Take them to see Hodge Close - put take care!!
Ferry on Ullswater
Meal and cinema ticket at Zefferellis - see if they notice its veggie!!!
The kids should love the chocolate factory in Hawkshead (only been open a couple of months, but it is really good fun). There's a good cafe nearby too next to the Sun Inn, with the biggest cakes. Our whole family shared one slice, the kids were quite amazed.
Grizedale for go ape/segways and the stickman trail (could prove expensive though.)
As a resident of Blackpool, i'd just like to clarify that Windermere is nothing like Blackpool. It's way busier for a start. Actually, you're not that far away, pop down for a day and see for yourself...................
The boating centre on Coniston is good. Hire a canoe or two and go exploring. If you hire canoes for long enough you'll be able to go down the lake to the island and have a picnic there.
We went a couple of weeks ago with 2 kids (7&9). Spent the morning on bikes along the lake path then after a picnic lunch went out on the lake for a couple of hours canoeing.
The kids loved it and they're not very outdoorsy.
I was in the lakes 2 weeks ago and against my better judgement we went to Bowness. It is dreadful, people smoking everywhere and the stench of fuel coming off the little hire motor boats was awful. I couldn't wait to leave. I despair that some people get coaches in from large cities, get dropped off in Bowness and think 'this is the lakes?' - it isn't. Passing a couple and saying hello, halfway up a hill as you're descending a desolate heather filled field, passing a little waterfall as it gently drizzles.... that's the lake district. 🙂
Not a massive fan of Windermere and Bowness itself for the reasons mentioned above but there is ample to do with the kids round there, ours loved:
Loughrigg Fell Hike
Treetop nets at Brockhole
South Lakes Zoo
Fishing in Coniston Water
Puzzle museum Keswick
They hated a hired boat though!
If you get a chance, eat Lunch at the tower bank arms in Sawrey, its really good.
Thanks all.
We had a brilliant week!!! Sunshine until Friday
We did Treetop nets
Wilfs & Hawkshead Brewery (& Wheelbase)
Climbed Scafell Pike
Hawkshead & Chocolate Factory
Coniston Watershead
Treetop Trek & Triple Zip
All good and thanks for the heads up
