I really like Simon Reeve.
Given where simon reeve has managed to come from I for one would like to have a pint with him.

Mainstream national tv. He’s done documentaries from some of the most dangerous parts of the world, and done things that terrify me just thinking about them, he’s got bigger balls than probably the majority of the people on this forum. You’re obviously just not paying attention.
No, not a big telly watcher. Not when there's a life outdoors to lead. And I think I sleep through most stuff I do watch, knackered from the aforementioned doing stuff. Which means Mrs C gets control of the remote.....she clearly isn't a fan of Me Reeve.

I like that he highlights the problems in the area, not just the beautiful touristy stuff. See his programs on the Lake District or Cornwall.
@convert - if it makes you feel any better, I've never heard of him either. I opened this thread to see if it was another Countrywatch thing/spinoff. I've actually watched a few of those.
Simon Reeve is the real deal. He left school aged 16 with 1 GCSE, dodged around getting in to all sorts of bother. Landed a job in the post room at The Times and blagged his way into investigative journalism. Aged 21 he wrote a book about Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, he predicted a massive terrorist attack. This was before 9/11 and before most people were interested in Bin Laden. After 9/11 he was regarded as an authority on the subject so was in demand in media, he also briefed the White House. His travel documentaries are thoughtful and powerful. There are not many people doing proper travel programmes any more, he is very good.

Reeve's thesis is that a group of several thousand men who fought against the Soviets during the Afghan War of the 1980s would later dominate international terrorism. He warned that many of these men, known as the "Afghan Arabs", had become the core of Al-Qaeda and constituted a new breed of terrorist, militants with no restrictions on mass killing. Reeve concluded that, by 1998, the world was entering a new age of apocalyptic terrorism, and predicted that Al-Qaeda would launch massive attacks on Western targets.

I like his TV adventures but this adds a whole new dimension.
His TV presenter skills started off a bit shaky, to the extent that I initially wondered how he landed a major travel series on the BBC, but within a few programmes the underlying knowledge and people skills became very clear.

For about a second I felt bad about slouching under a blanket on the sofa, wasting my life watching TV, but then realised that it was 9-10pm on a Sunday night in January, during an amber storm warning and I could hear the wind trying to tear the roof off. I wonder what I should have been doing instead? Polishing my carabiners? Sharpening my ice-axe? Practising the mating calls of lesser known primate species? (Oh hold, Simon may have been helpful with this...)

I always remember the piece on Popbitch years ago about Ray Mears having an assistant carry a bag full of chocolate bars for him to scoff between takes on his jungle survival shows. Certainly explains his physique.
