Hi. Just wondered as there seem to be a lot of tech experts here what the opinion is for getting a roaming WiFi subscription for my I pad.
It doesn't have 3G as service I have found that is poor near me and very slow.
I see BT offer wi fi for £6.00 /month that claims to also work abroad and covers "many" transport terminals and shopping centres. I plan to take the I pad into London on my train journey and the occasional holiday. Is getting the BT WI Fi worth it? Thank You!

There are probably more cafes with 'free' wifi than hotspots and these cafe's will generally charge you only for the coffee you're drinking and they rarely change the WEP key so you can get on it the day after.

I personally wouldn't pay for Wifi if I can get away with it.

I have my ipad hooked up to Vodaphone for 15 quid for 2 gig per month.
I don't have a smartphone though.
If you have an android phone the cheapest and best way is to tether through that. There are many times people around me have 3G on their phones whilst I have no coverage.
I don't think you can do that with iphones but I could be wrong.

When I was travelling around america we used to go into the Apple store to use their internet on flash computers! not as nice as sitting in a nice coffee house with a skinny-wet-choca-mocha-latte-frappacino but it's free!

I'm no tech guru but tethering means you wirelessly connect the ipad to the phone and use the phones 3G to connect to the net.
As many phone contracts throw in free internet its cheaper than having a seperate contract for your ipad.

This might be worth a try:

I've considered doing it to get my folks off of the 56k modem I put in for them 10+ years ago! Last time I looked I could buy a box for £30 and use it to share my broadband connection (Virgin), in return you get lifetime free access. Seems a good deal.

Either Tether (as above) via a smart phone or consider a '3' Mi-Fi PAYG / Contract Device. It's a wireless 3G transmitter. The Ipad picks up the Mi-Fi signal and you're away! Very good bit of kit.

Three Mi-Fi if you've got a wifi only iPad.

Basically allows you to get online anywhere, as you would with a normal 3 dongle (3's coverage is easily the best and their prices quite good), but with a wireless only device (ie. no USB port) such as an iPad... Definitely worthwhile...

It might be crap round your house but if you're looking for it to work nationwide then you should be opting for a SIM (assuming it's a 3G ipad) and using free or paid for wireless as and when you can find it.

Check out giffgaff's pay as you go. It runs on O2's network. See http://giffgaff.com/goodybags/500MB-mobile-broadband

You can buy unlocked 3 MiFis from amazon or fleabay... This allows you to just put in the sim card of whichever company is doing cheapest 3G data at the time. Also means you can buy a cheap data sim for any country you wish to visit, thus avoiding getting hammered for 'roaming'.

Preloaded with a 3GB/3month 3 mobile sim card... £72

McDonalds coffee is surprisingly OK, for the cost. It does mean you have to sit amongst the commoners though.
