I'm in a bit of a metal-core band and we've just released our first song!
Wrote, recorded and mixed by ourselves, so check it out at

would be interested in hearing peoples opinions/thoughts on the track...

I'm not normally a big fan of metal but that's not bad. What I did like was the "proper" singing rather than the "I think I sound like a demon" growling so often associated with the genre

Not sure about the mix - not enough bass & the kit sounds very trebly, especially the kick - but yeah, not bad at all

here's my band: www.reverbnation.com/chasingglass
and my old band: www.reverbnation.com/thewickeffect

two completely contrasting styles as you'll no doubt see

I really like it apart from half way when the vocal changed. I liked the music loads.

Thanks guys!
It's our singers first 'real go' at screaming so we expect him to get better and his voice to get more comfortable with it in the future.

recording, mixing and mastering took about 5 days of solid work, not to bad in a home studio! (but we are all music technology students)
and yeah as the bass player, I think the bass could go up a bit! 😉

John, liking 'chasing glass' some sweet tunes there!

getting more like it phil, still needs to be heavier though, my tastes tend to run to ENT, early entombed, Doom, optimum wound profile, etc... as well as all the old goff stuff so unless it sounds like a riot in my frontal lobes it aint "metal" 😀

lol, we think we're sort of progressive with metal-core elements, so prog-core!
Some of our other tracks are heavier too.... but not quite as heavy as that! ^ 😯

Try this on guitar (8 strings). Drummer's playing some insane time signature. Instrumental only.

matt pike doing stoner rock on a 9string custom guitar is always awsome as well

lovely heavy sound for a 3 piece band

the animal stuff is very similar to the old ephel duath sound

already knew of chimpsanner, but will definitely check out blotted science, thanks!

That's pretty solid, good work... I think the sound quality's letting you down though, the main guitar lacks edge which takes the energy out of the riff and the drum mix isn't right either.

Slight criticism... It feels a wee bit stuck in its groove, the guitar and drum could both do with a wee bit of variety in the main part- bit of double kick, something to break up the timing in the guitar as it's a wee bit metronomy, even if just a held note or a wee harmonic off the main run or something.

Maybe it's just me but the sung vocals really remind me of old Lostprophets, and Earthtone9. Neither bad things. I think the sung parts are better than the screamed, but then, I don't like screamed vocals much.

Yeah... I'd listen to that. I've seen much worse on big stages and labels.

Thanks!
I see what you mean about the drums, but we did record the majority in my mates living room, and our drummer had just joined us (2 practices before recording)
Plus he was on an electric kit and had no input on the song!

our new material however is sounding even better 8)

Quite like it. Was just about to say the drums sound programmed/like a drum machine when I saw you used an electronic kit. Def agree the bass needs to be louder (another bass player here 😉 ).

I like philconsequence's stuff too - though it's deeply silly (in fact that's why I like it). That Bezerker thing is bobbins though IMHO.

While we're at it, here's my band - completely different to any of this. Better recordings will be finished soon....

yes but grum, you are a bastion of middle of the road normality so i wouldn't expect anything else from you 😀

and you don't like my bass guitars either

Is that Berzerker track supposed to sound like that? It sounds like it's got a PC error message tone running right through it. DINGDINGDINGDINGDING. It's pretty cool apart from that but I can't take it seriously...

tazzy you'd probably think my band was bobbins - not sure you'd call it middle of the road normality though.

Just wondering, do you carry over your nichewhoreishness into every avenue of your life? Niche clothes, food, haircut etc? 🙂

grum I'm not niche, I'm just me and I look all normal and stuff* It's more of a surprise to folks that way 😀

* this is in comparison to the mohawked nut job I used to look like, where people used to cross the road to avoid me. 😥

Ok, I can appreciate the technical ability of the Berzerker's drummer but it just ruins the songs. All about speed and showing off, no thought given to the song. The Yngwie Malmsteen of drums 😉 I'd love to hear some of their stuff with Adam Duce or Raymond Herrera or someone similiar playing

All with a gigantic IMO of course.

listened to the track finally jamesH! i couldn't last night as my housemate was asleep and left my headphones at work.

agreed on the lostprophets comment, but when it changed to screaming i wasnt put off, you can tell he's not used to screaming yet by the technique but as it gets further into the song it sounds more natural, almost TBDMish at one point! also agreed on being able to tell its a drum machine and some elements of the recording could do with sorting out BUT....

i like it 😀 i still get loadsa bands messaging tracks to me through facebook hoping i'll manage them and 99% of the tracks i get sent are rubbish, your's however.. shows potential!

my advice considering the current UK metal scene:

build on the singing, all the bands carving a bigger name for themselves are the more commercially viable ones, and that means singing. if you haven't already then check out 'Karnivool' as an example of a band thats not even that heavy but they've VERY popular in the metal crowd.

friends bands that are also worth checking out, most have an element of singing you'll notice:

bury tomorrow
visions
ailiases
tesseract
textures
monuments
fell silent (old incarnation of tesseract and monuments)
the arusha accord
sylosis
exit ten

work on the recordings a bit more before putting them out online, nowadays online stuff can't really be deleted, i'm hugely embarassed thinking that people can find some awful olf videos and recordings of No Consequence's early stuff if they stumble around the web enough, so peoples first impressions could be completely skewed by stuff that sounds nothing like the current band.

build relationships with local bands and bands you'd see as you're equals so to speak, facebook is great and using the band profile to 'tag' other well known bands etc is a great way of getting your bands name to pop up around the place on bigger bands pages.

work on content before merch, too many bands bring out t-shirts before they've even written an EP... labels understand why, but will always prefer to see a band working on their music, and working hard.

main thing.... enjoy yourself! i spent 5 years immersed in the UK metal scene and they were 5 very fun years, it can be stressful but try and remind yourself why you started... to make music you enjoy with good friends 😀

good luck dude!

I like it on the whole. Nice tight riff and drumming. Pop clean voice and vocal harmonies. Some nice proggy variations in the second half - that reminded of megadeath for some reason. Liked the ending too.

Not sure about the singer sounding like he's puking. Keep it clean IMO.

Phil - I was thinking that Synaesthesia sounded a bit chaotic but still enjoyable. At the end, it weirdly carried on, and I realised I'd accidentally clicked the link and started the embedded vid one after the other so had been listening to it doubled but a few second out of phase 😀

Who likes metal? (music)

wierdos and virgins...?

I'm not being disparaging.. just thinking about people I know that like metal.. maybe this says more about my friends than it does about the great unwashed long haired patchouli oil loving rock fraternity..

Thanks for the responses guys!

Phil, some brilliant advice there. I'm already listening to most of the bands on your list, but will be sure to check out the others.
Our plan is too start gigging as much as possible to build up contacts and a reputation. we're also sorting out some more tracks for an EP, which we will polish to perfection!
i'll share this thread with the rest of the band, and we'll build on peoples responses.
Thanks for the help!

Tazzy, that ^ is ace
