Hi all,

I have acquired a Dyson DC19T2 ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dyson-DC19T2-Cylinder-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B004JHXOH6), and a Dyson DC16 Handheld ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dyson-DC16-Handheld-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B000IEN2B2).

The DC 19T2 needs a flexible hose (about £20), and an extendable rod (about £30). The DC16 needs a new motor (or so I've been told, hopefully that's it), £15, and a wand if I want one (about £20)

a. Is it worth spending the money on fixing up either one?

b. If I fix one up, which one? I would rather the handiness of the handheld DC16, but it doesn't have the greatest reviews, especially compared to the DC19T2. Should be cheaper to fix though, although slight risk it isn't just the motor that is dead.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Duane.

They are often compared to a married lady after two years, they start to whine and stop sucking

Chuck them in the bin and buy a barely used Oreck or numatic for £30 that actually works.

Generally Dysons are easily repairable but with the hand-held whether it's worth it may well depend on the state of the battery, which you probably won't know until you've fixed it.

I used to work for Dyson

I really wouldn't bother fixing the dc16. Compared to the new handheld machines they have rubbish power and battery life.

The dc19 though is a good machine, I have one myself. After that the cylinder machines started to get more complicated and gimmicky with not much performance gain. Give the filter a good clean under the tap and let it dry out on the radiator.

I also used to work for Dyson and agree with what Pete said.

I also worked at Dyson for a short while. The DC19 was the benchmark machine. It's more powerful than a new cleaner. Defo fix that up.

They employ a lot of graduates so its often a stepping stone. How many people stay in their first job forever? They also employ a lot of people in general. Despite the usual misinformation about them moving production overseas its a big UK employer.

I have the dc19 and thought the motor had gone but it was a loose connection at the lead, constant pulling to max.  Also, i stripped it down and cleaned all the filters.  Hey presto new machine.  One bit of the hose went but at 30 quid i bypassed it.

From memory i paid 100 on gummy about 6 years ago, so now maybe its worth 50.  I d be tempted to buy a donor machine if any new parts are needed.

Lots of youtube vids on stripping them down, a 5 min job when u know what you are doing.

Theres a hidden internal filter as hinted above, wash it and its good to go.

My DC19 has lasted something like 20 years. I've replaced the washable filters and the main hose once after it split, but it's been amazing. A mate has it on longterm loan and, as far as I know, it's still going strong. Plus you can buy most of the parts as spares. Brilliant thing. I prefer it to the later Dyspn cylinder we have now.

Poolman - which bit of the hose did you bypass?

I already have this bit:

But guess I need to get both of these:

we still have a DC07

So do I.

I found a handy model guide here:

https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2959.msg24199.html#msg24199

This suggests that the DC07 was released in the "early 2000s" and superseded by the DC14 in 2004, so they're probably around 15 years old.

@OP: it says for the DC19, "We urge spare parts buyers to exercise great caution when buying any tool or cleaner head for these models as Dyson did a lot of playing around with different tool sockets and fittings at this time. Many otherwise seemingly identical machines can have differing tool sockets, and many people make mistakes when buying spare parts that involve a tool or tool/hose socket fitting."

OP - you are in luck! I have a spare dc19 wand tube (your second pic above) which you can have for nothing if you want. I don't have the other bits though I'm afraid.

It will definitely fit your machine if it says T2 (I could demonstrate some rather sad product knowledge here but I'll refrain...)

Despite the usual misinformation about them moving production overseas its a big UK employer

This. The company was tiny when they made that move. They probably employ 10x that number in the UK now and growing fast.

We used to have a DC19, was excellent. Much prefer it to it's replacement, an upright Dyson Animal Ball 2 thing...
