Righto, I've got some Old Pultney, Glenkinchie and Dalwhinnie on the go at the mo, looking to try something different next.

Have tried:

Ardberg
Balvenie
Cardhu
Glenfiddich
Glenmorangie
Laphroaig
Macallan
Singleton
Talisker

Fancy trying one of Cragganmore, Lagavulin or Oban, as they up the stakes a bit on price looking for recommendations first.

Ta

From an off-the-shelf list, I reckon you already peaked at Ardbeg, but perhaps give Caol Ila a try? If you want to get really serious then you could join the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and try out some of their bottlings.

Bowmore is my No.1.

Well, actually Springbank is No 1 but Bowmore more affordable!

Try both.

I am a it bored of whisky at the moment and am onto aged rums now.

If you can find some Cockspur 12 year old Barbados rum its worth a try, just straight over ice, delicious.

Jura Superstition
Lagavulin 16 y-o
Springbank 10 y-o

Or how about something that really is a bit different? Abhainn Dearg new spirit, not yet old enough to be classed as a single malt.

Found both the Cockspur 12yo and Springbank 10yo in Waitrose, looking forward to experimenting.

Also found Bruichladdich Rocks - any good? Might try that next.

Lagavulin 16 year old is loverly!!

Only whisky I actually prefer is Octomore, which is considerably more expensive. If you haven't tried Lagavulin I would say it is a an essential classic.

In fact, I'm going for one now....... 😉

Lagavulin 16 is way overated.

Try finding a special edition Talisker or Lagavulin that's sherried.

Auchentoshan special edition 3 wood is sublimely smooooth. Current favourite. Amateur review here

I aim to please gordimhor lol

Personally I'm not keen on lagavulin

For a complete change from the islay ones I often reach for the bushmills ten

as a couple of ^them^ have suggested, when you try something different, why not try something DIFFERENT ?

cognac, armagnac, calvados, rum, grappa, ... there's a whole world of expensive & poncy spirits out there

Tried Penderyn - wasn't for me.

So Cognac - might give that a go sometime - what would be good to start with?

For a big tasting whisky I like Edradour or Glenfarclas 105. Edradour I liken to having a big bite of a rich, dark fruit cake, and the Glenfarclas reminds me of custard; love both of them in the winter.
For a lighter, more summery one, I might go for a Benrinnes.

The answer to this question is always the same. Bunnahabhain. If you like peaty, or even if you don't, my wife who has an O-level in whiskey says you need to try this.

Please don't cross her, she'll just make me pay.

organic355 - Yep, got the 12 year old. Had a couple of large measures last night over ice as suggested. I like the initial sensation and taste in the mouth, but feels a little harsh when swallowed (Oi, no smutty comments at the back 😆 ) Seemed to get better as the ice melted a bit and the water eased it. Certainly a change from Whisky. Not sure having it after Porter was wise, so be interesting to try it pure next time.

Jack Daniels and Jim Bean are bourbons. Ha typical STW back chat. Never, I really never did know that! Next you will tell me its made from corn! and is Mainly made in the USA! You really are of high itellect! Its still whisky! Bourbon whisky! I would not swap a bottle of Jack Daniels for any one of the listed Scotch on here!

Jack Daniels & Jim Bean are bourbons anyway.

Jack Daniel's isn't a bourbon, it's a Tennessee Whiskey. "Bourbon" is a (US) legally protected term. JD is charcoal filtered, which excludes it from being a bourbon.

Pedantry aside, Jim Beam white / Jack Daniel's aren't exactly examples of premium grade American 'whiskeys'. In UK terms, their equivalents would be things like Teachers.

If you prefer bourbon / JD to Scotch / Irish whisk(e)y, I'd suggest trying something like Maker's Mark. Then when you next champion bourbon in a whiskey discussion, you might have a little more credibility. (-:

Penderyn is awful compared to some of the real whisky described above.

Really it is vile, good for unblocking drains.

Well, as a rule I don't drink before lunch, but since so many of you are already at it I'll have a Bushmills Malt please.

Very tasty and very very mellow. Quite different to Scotch whisky.

Got a 15yo Dalmore for Xmas which is very impressive.

I'm not bothered, tried loads of whiskys. Your fancy Scotch and Bourbens. I still like what I like. Your opinion is not noted! Give me a bottle of JD or Jim B anyday. Comparing Teachers to Jacks is just stupid anyway. Typical STW incediary posting!

I have also tasted many wines. I have tated wine costing 5 quid that tastes as good as fancy named and vintage years costing way more, that tasted vile. Although some middle class person quaffing it down and being a snoot, will have a total different opinion!

Penderyn is awful compared to some of the real whisky described above.

My overriding impression of Penderyn is that it'll be lovely when it's finished, but given what they're charging for it now I don't think I'll be able to afford it by then.

By my reckoning, they can't be far off producing a 10yo now? Anyone know?

I'm not srsed tried loads of whiskys. Your fancy Scotch and Bourbens. I still like what I like. Your opinion is not noted!

's your loss. You can lead an arse to water but can't make him drink. Or something. (-:

My bottle was most agreeable, maybe all the bile in your mouth soured the taste...

Penderyn - quite liked it myself. Admittedly its overpriced and a little erm bland?

As for recommendations, it really depends whether you like the peaty whiskies or not. I don't, so I'd recommend:
Highland Park
Glenkinchie distiller's edition

I wasn't keen on Penderyn either. Lagavulin 16 is probably my favourite whisky, amazing.

Penderyn is very batch dependant as it is still in its early days and the consistency is not quite there yet. Therefore one batch may end up tasting like sulphur and the next could win an award (I believe this is mainly due to the quality of the barrels they are/have been using) I also agree that it is overpriced especially with the lottery of quality.

For something different I would say Quarter cask is hard to beat, but maybe something from the little Speyside distillery of Benromach. It does an excellent peated whisky if that is your preferred style, but my favourite is the organic.

Thats interesting from Bentos.

The stuff I had was almost undrinkable but I probably would try it again, but mainly cos the distillery is just up the road from where I live.

It'll always do well if just for novelty of being the only welsh whisky.

Not a fan of Penderyn either - again, it'll do well because it's Welsh, not because it's a good whisky.

As others have said, Lagavulin 16 is good, or try some of the specialist single cask bottlings - there are some great ones out there. I have a 16 yo Laphroag at the moment, which is lovely. Another (but not Islay) great is Aberlour Abun'd'a. Off to pour one now actually (and I may look up how to spell it whilst I'm there!)

This man is wise. The Benromach Organic is superb for the money, it's one of my favourites. It's hard to beat without spending considerably more.
