I've been an Apple user for last 4 or 5 years, current handset is an iPhone 5s.
Am looking at changing network and am likely to just take out a sim-only deal, however, the option is of course always there to walk away with a natty new handset.
Trouble is, im growing older and more bitter and twisted than ever, and I generally just can't be arsed playing around with handsets and taking advantage of all of their 'features'.
Hence why the easy Apple option appeals. It's so intuitive to use IMO.

So which alternative handset should I consider? I've tried bringing myself up to speed with the latest versions..
The iphone 6 and 7 doesn't seem to offer anything better than a slightly improved camera and faster processor (they always say that), plus it requires a small mortgage to fund purchase.

The Samsungs.. 7 and 8.. seem to have choice of with or without 'edge' screen, and in either large or ludicrous sizes. Camera quality sounds better on paper, not that that ever equates to fact. Also requires small mortgage.
Have held an 8 edge though, and the screen really was impressive.

What of the others? Huwaiwaiwhatever? Google Pixel? LG? Sony Xperias? HTC?

My main usage is to fuel a Clash of Clans addiction, make clear phonecalls, and take good quality images of my kids and at gigs.
Large memory preferred as my 16gb iphone is a pain in the arse, constantly filling up.
I'd probably also prefer my handset not to be the size of a dinner plate.

I did use an HTC 'Hero' (i think) years ago, which i found really good - so I dont think im incapable of switching back to an Android interface, but once you've gone and learned Apple it does seem strangely daunting to leave..

Also, im going to take some convincing that £50pcm over 2 years is good value.

So is there currently a clear winner in the 'astonishing camera/easy to use/good battery life/competitively priced' market?

Part of the problem is that they all look so similar these days - just how different are the brands?!

What’s wrong with the iPhone 5s?

im constantly battling its memory limitations, and of course it isnt expandable.
Plus, the camera is pretty average by modern standards - especially in low light situations.
Oh, and the battery rarely lasts much longer that an hour or so's browsing/roaming whilst on a train into town, for example.

Other than that, its great.

I guess what im looking for is a handset that has a camera/battery life/memory that wipes the floor with an iphone5, but at a much better price.
Moon/stick?

I think you'll find a 6s is a big* improvement over a 5s. Well, I did anyway 🙂

*as in huge.

MrsSlim has just ordered a 128gb iPhone 7 - will be interesting to see how it performs.
Ridiculous price though..

My wife has a 7Plus, upgrade from a 6. It's a far, far better device.

I was an iPhone user for years until I tested the Android water with a cheap Jiayu S3.
It was different and took a little getting used to but I liked the bigger screen and customisation possibilities.
I've now just switched to a OnePlus 3 and I'm struggling to see how phones can get any better.
I personally think iPhones look rather boring now - probably due to the UI hardly changing.

Mrs Prawny has got an iPhone SE which seems to be an improvement on my 6 without being any bigger than a 5. I'd probably go for one of them if you don't fancy a bigger one.

Conversely I like the fact it stays more or less the same to save fiddling about every time its patched.

SE is a great value upgrade for the OP if the screen size isn't an issue. I've recently moved to a 6S plus and think I'll stay with the larger screen. I have an SE for work, and capability wise there's plenty on the spec sheet between them but little I actually notice.

Galaxy A3 is compact, uses an SD card and has most of the features anyone needs.

Lenovo P2 is the new king for £200 and under, insane battery size 5100mAh (lasts days without re-charge) IIRC.

Motorola g5. Android 7 (nougat). Around £160. 16gb internal and 128gb micro SD support. Or some of the new Nokia android phones look quite good vfm. Always had android, not a apple fanboi as just overhyped products.

sharkbait - i'd never heard of hte OnePlus brand, thanks for pointing them out.
The 3T seems to have rave reviews save for average battery performance. How do you find the camera?
It looks like a giant slayer at the quoted pricing of around £399. Will need to take a closer look.

That Lenovo P2 also looks well worth considering. Stonking battery life and good price (average camera perhaps?).
Cheers.

Its not an HTC, OnePlus is the company name. Camera seems good to me and is certainly better than anything I've had before.
Don't worry about the battery life, it charges so quickly it doesn't matter - but a charge lasts >24hrs fairly heavy use.

Might be just me but the obvious thing is to

1. Sell yr iPhone, buy a simple Nokia 'dumbphone' for £15 or however much they are, something that makes calls and txts and battery lasts weeks or more.

2. join the local library and look fwd to reading instead of brain-killing, headache-inducing and addictive pixel-wars

3. Congratulations now yr 'smatrphoneaphobe' title may have some actual meaning behind it 😉

4. Celebrate with a nice new pocket-sized proper camera that will easily wipe the floor with any phone-cam at gigs (and everywhere else.)

So I picked up the Lenovo P2 after seeing it recommended above, after a fairly pain free transfer of data from iPhone to android I can honestly say I wish I'd made this change months ago.
The phone is excellent, does everything my iPhone does (or needed it to do) in its stride, bigger and better screen, great button layout, stunning build quality for £200 (on close scrutiny it honestly compares to one of the £700 jobbies) and slick lag free performance.
Oh, the battery life really is stonking too.

Great recommendation and very happy so far. Ta

Just to add, I've generally bought 'premium' android phones until my last upgrade.

I went with a Huawei P9, 95% of the performance for half the price. I certainly don't regret it.
It's really slick and fast, the rest of the spec is excellent.

Prices for flagship models from the likes of HTC and Samsung are just getting ridiculous.

Google nexus or pixle, the Google interaction is brilliant with a lot going on via the now stuff. Will integrate with anything and native Android is fast and simple to use.

Great to hear the new Lenovo P2 gets the thumbs up. 🙂

Given how tight my finances are compared to most and having just treated myself to a new road bike, I'm torn whether to buy one myself (as I don't make many phonecalls at all, a £10 voucher typically lasts me over 6 months).

I could in theory spend £200 on a Wahoo Element Bolt, but I like the idea of a P2 to cover my ride tracking adequately, while it can also do other things including 4G mobile internet if I'm in an area with poor BT hotspot reception.

Where are you buying the Lenovo P2 for sub £200?? I'm definitely up for getting one, I have a Moto G4 which is great and would buy a G5 but I really need a compass and the UK version doesn't come with it (the US version does) :-/

I think it's only available through Three - but comes unlocked.

Cheers for the update. I reckon I'm gonna get one in the next few weeks. Took my >4 year old Xperia T off charge yesterday morning and by mid afternoon with virtually no use it was down to mid 40%...

I went from the first Moto E (about £60) to a premium Galaxy. And don't get me wrong, the Samsung has a much nicer screen and resolution, and takes far superior photos, but for a long time it was so laggy I considered sending it back. I went through umpteen guide online on how to speed it up, which is apparently any number of things, from changing keyboards to upgrading key software. It does work a lot better now, but I spent 6 months trying all kinds and I'm not really sure what did it in the end. It just seems Samsung phones are bundled with so much crap it doesn't really matter that they are 10x more powerful than what I had before - out of the box it was a lot slower.

£33 a month according to their website, or is that through a re-seller?

Prices for flagship models from the likes of HTC and Samsung are just getting ridiculous.

I concur, I simply could not justify £800/£900 to have the latest and bestest - as soon as I got into the P2 I realised that all id be gaining is possibly a sexier curved screen and a better camera (minus the great battery life).

I like the idea of a P2 to cover my ride tracking adequately

I too figured that longer rides without access to power points would be something the P2 could take in its stride.
I took it off charge around 9am sunday morning - with heavy usage yesterday I am now looking at 74% remaining charge around 25hrs later. This thing will keep on trucking till Wednesday at this rate.

I think it's only available through Three - but comes unlocked.
Yes - its exclusive to 3 in the UK, but unlocked. I also picked up a 3 sim with 12gb of data for £15pcm, in which case I can tether the iPad for weekends away with my lad and not have to worry about data usage.
Main reason though was I received terrible coverage in the South Downs valleys, am now achieving 4g virtually everywhere so couldnt really be happier.

it was so laggy I considered sending it back. I went through umpteen guide online on how to speed it up

Another reason I plumped for the P2 - i've read in several reviews how certain handests get hot when the processors are worked hard, and although the processor on the P2 is last gen (Snapdragon 625 i think?) I also read that in its current split quad core config (effectively 8 core), its runs ice cool and with zero lag, and I can currently confirm this to be the case. So far im yet to notice any warmth from the battery and there is so little lag that its making my iPhone 5 seem like a steampunk handset.
In fact I did a test with MrsSlim using our fingerprint access from a locked screen to the home screen - the P2 is virtually instantaneous, with the iphone 7 lagging behind every time.

I'm completely sold on it. All they need to do is put a giant slaying camera in the P3 and charge £250 and i'd be all over it on my next upgrade.

Currently working through the numerous personalisation features, I can now see why 'they' suggest that a clean Android interface is a joy.

Just got a huawei p10 lite. Impressed so far.

Was seriously tempted by this, looks great in the flesh and a stonking twin camera - in the end I just couldnt justify another £200 for a better camera with less battery life. But no doubt, a fine handset.
In fact, on closer inspection the p9/10, OnePlus 3T, Pixel and a couple of other chinese variants all looked like genuine contenders to the flagship models.
Interested to see what the OnePlus 5 is like when released this summer.

Weds morning, 23% remaining on battery.. since first charge on Sunday morning.

If you value battery life the P2 is a no brainer.
