Ok so its time for a new work phone.

I need the following features:

Good web browsing.
Sat Nav at reasnoble cost.
Sport Tracker type app to keep track of my training.
Decent camera must have flash as use it for work in dark factories.

Have had a Nokia 5800 which I like but, the screen is very poor for sensitivity and it has always crashed. Thoughts so far are Samsung Galaxy S, I Phone 4, Nokia N8.

Any ones views greatly recieved, before you start shouting I have read lots of the previouse posts but have seen very few relating to the specific needs I have.

Cheers Ben.

iPhone 4 or HTC Desire will do the trick.

Galaxy S is great (and IMHO has by far the best screen of any phone out at the moment) but it does not have a flash.

Desire or IPhone would be my choice.

Desire camera is very average. Nokias used to have good ones.

Nokia N8 seems to have the best camera, free sat nav and sports tracker it just seems that the operating system is still poor & the screen seems to lack a bit compared.

Will have to go and have a look at the Desire.

I do like the I phone and have been impressed by the camera for 5MP. Still don't think the reception is very good, and sat nav etc seems expensive.

Have you used one? It's a lot better than s60 5th edition (on the 5800 etc). Looks similar, but feels very different to use. Much faster etc. Very stable too, I've had one since a bit before release with pre-production firmware, and it crashes less than my android phone or ipad.

Screen wise - lacking how? In sunlight it's as good as a galaxy S super amoled (i've compared them both side by side). Lower resolution, but this isn't an issue in real use. Still higher res than any iphone prior to the 4 and no-one was bothered by them...

Ovi maps, especially the newest beta on the N8 is very good. My preferred mobile sat nav. Proper xenon flash on the N8 is great too.

I know this sounds like I'm selling the N8, but it does seem to match your needs. Web browsing it's currently "good enough" rather than good. The iPhone, n900 and any good android are better IMO.

Is cost an issue? The N8 isn't really comparable cost wise to the iPhone 4. It's about 2/3 the price (~£200 cheaper). I guess if it's on contract, for work, then not really? Also space for music? You can get up to 48gig in the N8 reasonably cheaply (16gig onboard, 32gb sd).

Though TBH very few are disappointed with the iphone 4. And saying sat nav is expensive when it's what, £40-60? I mean really? You've got a £500+ phone and you're worrying about a few tens of pounds?

IA, thanks for the info on the N8, I did like the look of it in the shop, so if the operating system has got better thats good to know. Think I might give it a whirl. Have been very happy with the OVI maps.

Cost is not really an issue as it is on a work contract but additional cost such as £40 - £60 for the satnav part is as I can't justify spending that on Sat Nav would prefer to use a map if it is going to cost me that much.

If you don't want to spring £20+ for a commercial sat-nav app then NavFree & skobbler are both free iPhone sat-navs, based on OpenStreetMap.

NavFree got me home last night after my crappy in-car Ford/Denso sat-nav went mental and decided I was just north of Brussels, rather than on the M1.

If you'd rather have a commercial nav then the co-pilot iphone app is £20 and Tom Tom is £40.

I've got an n8, in fact using it to type this (better not screw up!). If you are a symbian user then you will get on better with it. Its not turn on and use like iphone, i spent 2 days familiarizing myself with it, its quite complex. I came from n95 8gb. Camera is superb. Its smooth to use, hasn't crashed yet. Apps aren't as extensive as i would like, but some nice touches like built it fm transmitter. I would have gone android, but i wanted to keep my sports tracker history. I'm glad i chose this phone 🙂 oh one thing I'm scarred of is racking up a big bill abroad, there is no one click turn off data 🙁

I only have experience of the Desire and IPhone. Desire has google satnav installed which is pretty good, I got co-pilot on my iphone for £10 which I wouldn't consider expensive. Desire camera is okay, iphone camera pretty good. Both great for web browsing and cycle training type apps. If I had to choose between the two I would go for the iphone.

My Desire camera is randomly not bad and poor - it really suffers in lowish light despite the flash. If the camera is vital, get a Sony Eriksson - they do the best phone cameras.

A Desire does the rest fine - great tracker apps, decent satnav, etc. Advise getting a decent case for it - Case Mate Tough case being the best IMO.

Neither the Desire nor the iPhone will disappoint, the iPhone has a slight edge but you're condemned to iTunes, which was a deal breaker for me. I ended up with a Nexus One, which is basically a Desire.

Haven't tried the N8, although I wouldn't want to go back to Symbian after using Android. OviMaps is free and pretty good, though.

Edit: the camera on the Nexus One is fine - you're not going to get DSLR quality shots, but it's fine for snaps. Works OK though not brilliantly in low-light, but that's true for all phone camera's I've seen.

Go into the connectivity settings, pretty sure you can set for your 3g access point to not use it when roaming. Then it'll do it itself (this might even be default). (I'd check but I've lent the phone to someone just now)

Or if you want to be really sure, delete/or move your 3g access point out the default internet destination.

Also, you can check data use in the Logs/call log/whatever it's called app. I find symbian phones very frugal with data in general (compared to android phones at any rate!).

Also worth trying out swype if you've not already, free in the ovi store. Just for the landscape keyboard at the mo, but coming for portrait early next year (along with a regular portrait qwerty). Though I actually really like regular big-buttoned T9 in portrait, the N8 is obviously designed to be used one handed in portrait far more so than iOS/Android.

Heh, I thought that too. Then I got given an N8 and my X10's been gathering dust. Trying it again whilst I lend someone my N8, and it's better with android 2.1, but I still think I'll be back on the N8.

Anyone wants a sony X10 then get in touch...

ok, thanks IA. Think I have the hang of it, but not 100% Its set to always ask when roaming.
Whats the difference between Contract WAP and Contract Internet? WAP is higher priority accesspoint - WLANs are top of list.

That's a network specific thing. Different SIM cards define different access points. What network are you on?

The answer is probably it doesn't matter. They'll both work the same and tends to only matter on older phones that require different settings.

E.g. with an O2 sim in, i have just the "internet" one in my internet destination, and don't use the wap one at all (if internet doesn't work, i.e. no signal, the wap access point won't either).

I'm on Vodaphone. Just read that contract WAP should be used as it recognises that you are on a mobile and formats to that. Internet is just data. It would depend on activity though - web browsing use WAP.

You also have to use settings in web browser to "ask when required".. Changed that now. I have email on phone too, and cant see settings for that, so I'll just have to change frequency to not anyday of the week. Loads of settings!! Its what I mean, 1 button, data off, so much easier! Its the only thing that annoys me with the phone though.

Set the apps that use data to use the Internet destination, automatically. Then just move the 3G access points out when you're abroad. No need to fiddle each app individually. This is what I do.

If I remember I'll have a look at my N8 this evening, might be an easier way. I've not taken the N8 abroad yet but never had to fiddle much for previous symbian phones.

I'd use the internet access point then, not WAP. You just want a data connection, the phone will work out what to do itself. Any websites with a mobile version will read the user agent of the browser and work accordingly.

But WAP will probably work fine too, if it makes you feel better...
