Games:
Worms is as good as the original, but I'm still crap at it... even managed to kill all my own team on a practise game (where you are the only active player)
Terminator Salvation - I only played the lite version but that impressive
enough.
Fun but not too serious:
Galcon lite
Blowfish
Packet God
:shift lite
Archibald lite
Lightbike (tron game)

Apps:
Weatherbug
Traffic info
GPS lite (might buy this, as it's pretty good)
TV Guide

Have lots of other but those are the main one I use.
(also click on the iphone tag above to see other threads like this)

Games:

Zombieville USA
Tetris
iShoot (Scorched Earth clone)
Paper Toss
Maybe the new Civilisation game, but I haven't played that yet. I should do really and will probably end up buying before I go to the US.

Apps:

AroundMe
GPSLite
Facebook
eBay
Paypal
Flickit (Flickr uploader if you use Flickr)
Skype
Telegraph
Free RSS

Tube Delux is pretty cool, but not much use if you never go to London.
I also have the 100 pressups app, but only because it's easier to use than the web page.

Oh, and Ballistic FTE, but I am guessing you don't need a mil-spec ballistics calculator...

As far as games go you need Dropship (or Dropship Lite for the trial). Frenzic is also a great one for short puzzle games and is well produced.

Beatmaker is an amazing use of an iPhone from a creative music viewpoint, it's £11.99 is well worth it.

Gas Cubby (or Gas Cubby Lite) is a great app if you are an MPG freak, or just want to see how much you spend on fuel.

I also use Daylite Touch, but that is only useful if you use the OS X Daylite Application in your business; and the Ultralingua Collins Pro Spanish app. Those these apps are £40 and £15 respectively they have proved invaluable.

All the above apps are really good quality, non flaky offerings.

screen covers from ebay - got 6 for £3

Games - worms is great. Pac-man (lite) is good. The red bull air race is fun too.

Telegraph, Sky news, itn news, drawing board (good for taking quick sketches), google earth, blevelfree (spirit level - you can measure bike angles!), shazam (tells you what music is playing wherever you are), facebook.

For the bike - trail guru

PS

Screen protectors are not only a waste of money, but they also change the lovely tactility of the glass.

That whole screen protector culture came from plastic cell phone screens. I have had mine since the day the iPhone came out in the UK and it is still near perfect, despite several nasty scrapes (read: skating across the Hammersmith roundabout etc)

I am shocked and offended at that insinuation!

Quite a few nice little games on ze iPod, plus if you get the Scumm emulator you can play a lot of the classic LucasArts point and click adventures, like Monkey Island, Sam and Max, and Full Throttle.

What's everyone's best scores on Flight Control then?

My missus is totally obsessed by it. Her best (on the original airport) is 600-and-something. She plays it on fast-forward most of the time, because otherwise "it's too slow".

I think I may have married RainMan. 😯

Just got mine but 'Flight Control' is a great game.
'GridPoint GB' might be useful (and free)- gives your current position in OS format...only any use if you have paper map with you but good for the odd position check.

Going to look at the Sky remote record thing next.

Didn't have any effect that I could notice on mine. You're probably right about whether it's really necessary though.

the screen protector on mine is actually really very good - honestly no different to using the glass. it came with a very thin clear plastic hard shell which does a good job or protection - was 25 quid from an apple shop, but certainly does the trick, and WAY better than the cheap protectors on my mates phone.

Yep - def agree with cp re the screen protector. The one that came with my iClear comes packaged so it's easy to get on without any bubbles and I honestly haven't noticed the difference as regards functionality of the screen.

I don't care if I don't need one - the fact that I've paid £200 for something that relies on a functioning screen makes me keen to protect it 🙂

Flight Control - worth the money - quite addictive
I play Monopoly - for some reason I'm also addicted to that.
Need for Speed is an incredibly designed game - best driving game and amazing graphics considering its on a phone.
London Bus is the best transport app (well only really if you spend time in London)
Network Rail app is useful but quite expensive. for me it's worth the £5 or whatever as it saves me time waiting around at a station for cancelled trains etc.
idisk is useful if you're a Mac user (who uses iDisk on the Mac)
Sky recorder app comes in handy every now and then
Bloomberg app is useful if you're into that sort of thing
Rightmove has a fantastic app

Good question - I installed 'Trails Lite' and tried it at Penmachno yesterday. It was fantastic for the first 4 mins 30 secs (time/motion/ascent/descent with maps) then it stopped. Was it because the phone auto switched off? Was it because it had a bad signal (was in the pocket of my shorts in an old sock for protection). It would have been amazing if it worked - but if the phone needs to be fully on then it would be a non-starter as the battery would be flat in two hours.

MF - I'll test it tonight, going to use the GPSLite app and check it everynow and then. It's only a 1hr40 route I'm doing so should be no issues with battery life.

And sticking on topic, "Paper Toss" is an outstanding way to waste hours with the phone.

Civilization was released yesterday, and they are doing it for £2.99 (usually £6) for the first 48 hours. Wolfenstien RPG was also released this week.

the GPSLite app is also power hungry (obviously the GPS part), but I used it without issue for around 3hrs, in the depths of my backpack.

Anyone got tried a number of these utilities and decided which is best? As I'm thinking about paying for GPSlite.

With these GPS apps, do you have to leave the phone on or can you switch it off (ie, press the button on the top right to make the screen go off)?

Puzzled as to why mine stopped working so quickly after trying it.

you need to have the gps app running in the foreground or it stops working, so no, you cant switch it off. Trailguru has a lock facility that enables you to lock the screen and keep it running, although if you've jailbroken your iphone and installed sbsettings the trailguru lock screen doesn't function properly.

600 Graham? Cripes. I thought my 115 was good and the 200+ that people within five miles of me were getting.

How the hell does she do that? Must have a particularly clever system.

Tried GPSLite on the trail this evening, put it on lock and left it in the camelbak, results seem quite accurate apart from the height which appeared to be 50m out. I checked it at the end at sea level (we were right on the coast) and it said 49m! Distance was spot on and looking at the map it was very accurate. It was on for 1hr50mins and the iphone was reporting 20% battery power left. This was not a 3GS iphone so the newer iphone may be better in that respect.

Elevation data is always crap from GPS only readings. Only GPSs with a barometric altimeter give half decent results for height.

I find that I get about 3 hours when using the GPS using trailguru on my 3GS. With trail guru (and presumably other ones or they'd all stop when the scrren saver comes on) if you use the lock that's part of the app it doesn't go to the screen saver which stops it recording (bloody crap Apple not allowing for background apps... Grrr).

Oh and I downloaded Flight Control last night - probably the best 59p ever spent - that's brilliant 🙂 54 planes so far but that's playing with fast forward on as it seems too slow otherwise...

Yep. Jailbreak then install the "Backgrounder" app from Cydia.

When exiting an app you can hold the Home button (instead of just pressing it) and the app will continue to run in the background.

Got the new Civilisation game on my phone last night. It is mind-crack.

Fired it up to see what it was like and an hour and a half later realised that I really should stop playing it. Hideously addictive.

Background apps are the single thing that is most needed on the iPhone. Having Skype being enabled _only_ when you start it is a great nuisance.

Marmite: yeah, when someone mentioned the Cycorder app (which adds video recording to the iPhone 3G) and the SBSettings app I decided that was probably a "compelling reason".*

Plus I was spurred on by Apple claiming that anyone Jailbreaking is probably a drug-dealer or a terrorist. 🙄

* proof that I do sometimes change my mind following a STW debate

You've had no problems then, all ok?

Still haven't done it myself, though that SBS settings does look handy, even purely for turning bluetooth on and off as the standard settings is a faff all of the time.

Apple can tell if your phone is jailbroken, when you hook it up to iTunes. They are not blocking Jailbroken iPhones yet, the threat is there, but doubt they will act on it.

Marmite: yep, all fine so far. I used redsn0w 0.8 to jailbreak my phone (3G with 3.01 firmware), roughly following this guide:

http://www.hackthatphone.com/3x/r_3_0_1_3g.html

but ignoring the Macisms and doing it on Windows instead.

I've got Cycorder, SBSettings and Backgrounder installed.
All of which work fine.

Apple can tell if your phone is jailbroken

Apple have a "killswitch" in the firmware that they could potentially use to block/erase certain apps. The SBSettings app lets you disable the kill switch 🙂

Jailbreaking is bad yet the exclusive UK network is touting for business in the jailbroken phone app store!!

Brilliant!

Apple Blocking Some Jailbroken iPhones

It's not the same article I read, which gave actual figures of the amount of jailbroken iPhones from Apple. Basically when you connect to the itunes server it knows if it has been jailbroken or not.. But that article doesnt say anything about that.

I I expect I will jailbreak my iPhone, next year when the warranty runs out.. If I can!

Milkie: those are unlocked, not jailbroken phones.

Unlocking is an additional thing that you can optionally do to a jailbroken iphone to allow it to run on other networks.

cp: no, you can still update, but you have to wait for the jailbreak tools to catch up when new SW is released. Alternatively you can always just "unjailbreak" by going back to the standard firmware.

charlie brookers sugestions......

I'm unmoved in the face of friends screaming at me to join the iPhone cult. It's horrible. Here are a few iPhone apps I'd like to see:

1. An app that makes the iPhone scream 'I'VE GOT AN IPHONE!' each time the user pulls it out of their pocket. Once activated, it would be impossible to switch off. The only way to stop the constant embarrassment would be to repeatedly crack the device against a wall, or preferably your own face, until it shattered.

2. An app billed as a "comical toilet paper simulator". You switch it on, pretend to "wipe" your backside, and hey presto: the screen appears smeared with virtual pixilated poo. But – ho ho – just like the screaming iPhone app above, it's a permanent booby trap. Once you've performed your first comical wipe, in a frankly desperate bid to impress your non-iPhone-owning friends, it's impossible for the screen to revert to its original state. Instead, you're left with no option but to go home and cry.

3. An app that makes your iPhone unexpectedly oscillate and explode halfway through a conversation to a loved one, sending thousands of miniscule shards of plastic and silicon hurtling into your ear canal like a swarm of angry pins. As a bonus, the detonation also blasts your hand apart like a spent casing. Why? Because you bought an iPhone, silly.

You can't.

You have to jailbreak it to allow you to unlock it.

But you only need to unlock it if you want to use it on some other network.

Just following on about the GPS and battery life, I used trailguru for 3hrs from fully charged and the 20% battery warning appeared at 3hrs almost on the dot. Accuracy seemed pretty good all the way round though it was a road ride meaning less riding under trees than might otherwise be the case. (3GS)

If you like Chess, "Chess with Friends" is great - you can play someone you know or it can select a random opponent for you - it can then email you when a move's ready for you.

As suggested by 'RobGray' above...I bought 'Need For Speed Undercover' (£3.99) and it's kept me entertained over a long weekend. It's looks (and plays) great. (More like a PSP looking game rather than a regular mobile game)

If you're using a 3G phone with GPS a lot, then a Mophie battery pack helps a great deal, doubling the use of the phone. I use Tune.it iCarRadio to listen to 6Music over the normal network, not 3g, and that really drains the battery. The Mophie allows me to have four hours of Cerys Matthews and still get a whole day out of my phone, which includes a fair amount of doing this via wifi, which I don't think is too shabby. A 3Gs obviously has better battery management so may not need a Mophie, but there again, extra battery life never hurts. 😀
